I just got back from Alaska where the bear population is huge. I was kinda leary about going on long hikes at first with my nephew, but he's been out there camping in the country for two years now ( not straight, just often) and I felt he had a good grasp on the bear population in his area. We didn't have any spray or weapons on us aside from pocket knives and we just made sure that we talked often so as not to surprise any bears. I did hear his neighbors husky go ballistic one morning and chase a black bear away beside his house. We also came around a bend in the car after white water rafting and there was a black bear running ahead of us for about a hundred feet before it ducked in the bushes. The last one we saw was far up an opposite ridge that we had just hiked down from. He spotted it with my binoculars. Glad we didn't happen upon any directly.

You really are a plank Hombre

I'm sure "plank" is just some more of your cockney slang gibberish, but coming from a "chap" or "mate" like yourself, I'll consider it compliment.

No I am not vegetarian.

Well since you kill animals every time you slurp down a pile of jellied eels, I guess that makes you a hypocrite for supporting their death in order to fill your tummy with their slimy, dead carcasses.

Silver Searcher said:
I live on this planet along with millions of life forms, even low life like you...

"Low life?" You wound me kind sir. There is no need to hurl your vicious personal insults toward me every time I point out one of your ludicrous and moronic posts. I have feelings too, you know?
You obviously have no feeling at all...hence your post on owning a Bearskin Rug, I would like a Hombre head mounted on my wall :laughing9:
I am a Yorkshire man, not a cokney, and the topic wasn't about who are meat eaters, but about Bear attacks once again you stray off topic to suit your own adgenda ::)
And for the last one, I suggest you look at some of my posts, something you can only dream of. ;D

You have obviously never made love to a beautiful woman on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. That bear gave his life for my night of pleasure, and I appreciate the sacrifice he made for my carnal lust.

No sir, the post is on topic. It points out the hypocrisy of posters like yourself who think animals deserve the same status as humans and are to be put on some sort of pedestal equal with man. We are the top of the evolutionary food chain - deal with it. If I see a bear in the woods that I perceive as a threat, it's a DEAD BEAR. One human life is equal to the life of every single bear on this planet IMO. Methinks you have been reading too much from the book of Paul Watson.

Contrary to whatever you may think about me, I love animals - they taste delicious.

Is this more bragging on your banner finds? lolz..... I know your metal detecting peen is larger than mine but you don't have to keep rubbing it in.....

Look, I live in America. The Romans never conquered my home country centuries ago so pickins' here are slim. The most I can hope for are a few Cherokee points made of quartz and some coins or jewelry and I'm "OK" with that. Treasure hunting is but a hobby, not a way I measure my manhood against the rest of the internet.

In closing, bears are cool as long as they aren't killing people. Anyone in this thread who would marginalize the death of a young woman and her stepfather as "they had it comin' because they were hanging out in the bears world" should be ashamed of themselves. Put down your reefers and step into the real world.

I might have made love to an ugly woman on astroturf in the bed of an El Camino, but can't recall. You stirred em up Hombre. I believe I'm at the top of the food chain and have dominion over the animals and all that. Bears belong in the woods. So do I. But if there's ever a confrontation, and I have done everything I can to avoid it, I hope the bear's gonna lose. And I won't feel bad about it either. Any loss of human life is bad, and I try to study those cases and see maybe how I can avoid that. And it would be really great for ol Silver Searcher to make it over here someday and we'll go out and camp in bear country. I actually believe double S would adapt pretty well to the backcountry and get a kick out of it.

Didn't know there was a bear problem in England, but I am on the left coast of America so what do I know?
Nobody west of the Mississippi River exists according to US national news.
The remark about shotguns only making a bear mad has me confused.
Even a couple bird shot pellets in the eyes would blind them.
I would think evading a blind attacker would be easier.
Same with the wasp spray. It shoots 20 + feet and I am told it would blind an attacker, am I misinformed?

It is my understanding from the old timers that on guided hunts back in the old days, when a bear was just wounded the guide would go in with a short barreled shotgun, 12 or 10 gauge and take the bear out using buckshot. In my profession sometimes I am the first person to step foot on a proposed oil drilling site here in the backwoods and swamps of Louisiana. The tool I chose to hang from my shoulder in this adventure is a Model 1300 Winchester, Marine Grade, Stainless, 12 gauge 3" mag, with an 18.50 inch barrel, loaded with 000 buckshot. Note: As of today we haven't seen a grizzly bear but we do have black bears, alligators, panthers, bad ass snakes, wild hogs, feral dogs, cayotes and God only knows what else. I chose the Winchester for its reputation, being born from the Model 12, made in the USA and being a close range weapon.

OK, I'm going to give my 2 cents worth here, and I stress this is only MY opinion. I think what SS is getting at is killing for enjoyment as opposed to killing for food or defense. If a bear or, in our case, a slightly annoyed rabbit, was in the vicinity I would want protection :laughing7:. I do not live in a gun culture, having said that I do not have a problem with guns or hunting for food, but my experience with guns goes only to my service in the Royal Navy and game shoots, so I cannot identify with the choice of weaponry that you guys talk about. But, being serious for a minute, if I were hiking through Yellowstone or somewhere in Alaska, I would go armed if I could, and with something that would do the job, having said that, I would not go out of my way to actively hunt a bear or any animal for fun. Kuger and H-d-p (I hope you don't mind me using initials) (bugger, I could have written your whole name several times by now) also make very good points, if not slightly inflammatory, but also intended to illicit a response in a kind of way that I hope was tongue in cheek. To sum up for me, killing for food=OK, killing for defense=OK, killing for the sake of killing=psycho and you need help, shooting an animal to cause distress and pain=psycho and you need help. I hope this makes my point clear, but living in such different cultures, sometimes what we say gets taken the wrong way, so no harm or insult implied or intended to all. Be safe

Look, if you insist on waging a desperate and losing debate with me, at least make an attempt to string together a somewhat coherent sentence for me to ridicule. I'm beginning to think you may be typing your responses from your local pub with that holocaust of dentistry known as your mouth welded firmly to a beer tap.

Excellent post sir.

I do not hunt and I never have, though I do support others rights to do so. The state of Georgia has the 2nd largest deer herd in the US behind Texas. Bears are Godless Killing Machines no doubt, but deer are by far the most deadly animal in America. They are responsible for killing an average of 130 Americans per year due to traffic accidents. I'm sure Silver Searcher will probably counter with the argument that humans have no business driving cars and we should all use our legs as our primary form of transportation, or that the roads we built have infringed on the deer's natural habitat or some other nonsense, but the fact is that the deer population needs to be "managed", and if some guy can get his rocks off and at the same time put some meat on the family table by blasting one to Kingdom Come then I'm all for it.

That's the difference between our two cultures, we don't let the buggers drive. But seriously though, SS can fight his own corner, he is an intelligent man, I know, I have known him for some years now. And, from your posts I deduce you are a man of culture too. So, to the point.............Hunting, in my opinion is OK, better than slaughter houses. Defense is OK, better than dying :tongue3:. Living in an harmonious existance , where man and beast can coexist, taking into the mix human advancement is OK. But it is also our roll to protect and defend Gods creatures and habitats. I am not a "Tree Hugger" but I do love nature, I do shoot and I do protect wildlife and wont Kill for fun. When I do shoot, I eat what I kill. So, for the sake of harmony, and cos I know him, give SS a chance, he really is a good bloke if you don't annoy him.

Take care H-d-p and hh
