Oh, and for a good read, try "The Source", by James Michener. It's a novel set on an archaeological dig in Israel. In each layer they find an artifact, and then Michener weaves a chapter around that artifact, and you find out how it was lost and so on. As they get deeper and deeper in the dig, they find progressively more ancient artifacts. The nice thing about Michener's historical novels is that while they are fiction and pure entertainment, they are historically sound and you can actually learn quite a bit about the history of whatever particular area he's writing about. The man did his homework, and obviously researched his novel settings meticulously.
