The face-plate looks like a 1266. But the coil doesn't match the stock coils sold with that machine. So perhaps there's some after-market compatible coil that was added by a previous owner? As for the black tape, I dunno.

As for the 1266 in general, it doesn't do well in mineralized soil. And while it has amazing depth in air tests (15"+ or more on a quarter), you will rarely ever realize this depth in actual in-ground conditions (unless you're hunting clean white dry sand). And the disc. is very innacurate beyond the first 5 or 6". Still though, some people like it back in those days.
