Do you mean state land, or state park land? (as they may have different rules entirely). Not all state land is managed by the park's dept, afterall.

If you meant state parks, you can check this site for your state: http://www.fmdac.org/parks/parks.htm

But if you meant just state land (idle roadsides, etc...) then turn your question around the other way: Why would you think you can't? If there's no specific prohibition, then why wouldn't you be able to? The state no doubt has a website, with their codes, laws, etc.... on there. Simply go there and type in "metal detectors" in the word search box. If it's silent on the issue (for non-park-managed land), then so be it, it must not be prohibited, right?
