As I travel the 5, going from L.A. to Southern Oregon and back down, I see many road projects going on, listed as the "American Recovery Act". Not sure how many jobs are created or who gets rich off of them. at least they're fixing our freeways... a few feet at a time. Apparently it's a 10 year project.

I've been out since April, trying to decide if I should stay here and continue looking for work in the field I'm normally employed, or pack it in at age 53 and relocate up north. I too feel bad for the future generations just starting to look around for work, good luck to all, sorry it's not gonna be the fairy tales read to you in your youth.
Question, when they post unemployment numbers do they take into consideration the kids just hitting 18 that have never been on the books?

I live in South Florida and what really upsets me the last 6-7 years is seeing who is actually working on the roads. I would bet as many as 75% are illegals. These used to be great jobs. Shovel ready BS. We do need to clean out elected officials who have any involvement with cronyism. Please note that many of the large Road Construction Companies hire lobbyists to throw work their way. It's a scam! Google Ranger Construction and Vecellio tell me its not.

Yea amen

Vor,didnt realize we were at war?I hear your points but you are not grasping what I am trying to say.........our rates are lower than the Big Guys!!!!The Company have given those perks for over 40 years, what all of a sudden changed? No we havent had a rate increase...the economy sucks and we actually care about our customers!!!I guess thats not politically correct any more though.Sad state of affairs this country has come to!!!

Ok. I'm back to answer your questions.

No, I didn't know we were at war except for in Afghanistan, Iraq and soon to be Syria and Iran. Not counting the police actions we take at over 1,000 overseas bases we operate. http://www.acq.osd.mil/ie/download/bsr/BSR2010Baseline.pdf

I have no idea why your cost are below the "big guys". Maybe they have high dollar lobbyists, I don't know. Whatever they have must be acceptable in the eyes of the PUC. I doubt that it is a conspiracy but it could very well be politically motivated. In most states the PUC commissioners are appointees of the governor and act as their puppets. He who contributes the most to the governor's campaign gets the favors.

The point I was trying to make is that if your company owners are doing well then they can still give back to the community, if not directly to the employees. I would bet that they could still give the benefits but not use them to account for operating cost. Just a guess.

It never made sense to me to take a $100,000 steer and make burgers/steaks out of him. Top steer goes for record $230,000 at Fort Worth Stock Show | News | News from Fort Wort...

Hey this is America. We can't have companies make thier employees happy. We can't have families able to afford stuff. If a company doesn't want to pay thier employees a very low wage, well then...they can just take thier Jobs else were. And what is this bonus, food, and Zero Health Insurance deductible, hogwash can't have that kind of employer in this good country of ours. Good day Sir......I said Good Day.

Touché!

I'm not unemployed but working reduced hours. Some weeks I'll get 19 hours and then 3 weeks down the road I'll get 60 but has been few and far between. Kinda sad for the concrete delivering business

Hi guys sorry to read about the troubles.
I worked in I.t. for 23 years until a very attractive young woman turned up in charge,,, touting the phrase "Best practices" .
After getting everyone to effectively jump through hoops,,,, trying to keep their jobs she outsourced our jobs to a country where there first language is not English.
I hear its not very satisfactory.

I agree outsourcing jobs to overseas countries while making money for "the company" in the short term,,,, hurts the "country" in the long term.
Its the lower and middle working classes (that's what they call them here,..... I guess middle class = blue collar ??) that drive the local economy like buying household goods, metal detectors etc.. and when that large group of people get scared, they stop spending and the spiral really starts... I guess we all know the rest.

I really applaud any company that has the guts to "not" outsource to overseas for a few extra pennies...

I hope and pray for all us guys/gals that we actually make it through this ok... and that those that deserve their reimbursements from the Govt and insurance companies get their money !!
I have to go back to University to get my meal tickets in Computer Sci. But will be working "on call" for mowing lawns and digging gardens and working for nuts low money in a rest home just to pay the bills.
Thank goodness for metal detecting !!

Yup Chips, and sadly I think the worst is yet to come. For those who haven't had their jobs outsourced, be ever thankful. For the rest of us poor slobs, it is probably best to learn a trade, especially one that can fleece the large company's :laughing7:

IBM, you need a new thermostat, the will be $500,000 :laughing9:

I`ve not read all the posts but., it`s difficult in Europe too..
Wages are low...companies open and close...i`m not too badly off, i work in catering which is always short of workers..but you have to put the hours in to make a decent wage.
In parts of the UK there are people who hav`nt worked for 20 yrs..and now have children who don`t get work and so the wheel turns...

Self employment, internet selling...are good options provided you have the skills or the ideas.

What I find funny is how the statistics tout about all the new jobs that have been recently created, but what they neglect to tell you is that 99% of them are part time with no benefits.:laughing7:

veronasteve, yup, it appears the planet is hurting and soon enough everyone will have to rob Peter to pay Paul

It's like some economists say, the bubble burst and we've been living in a growing bubble for long time. At some point, someone will come along with a sharp pin and pop the balloon :tongue3:

Sandigger, you hit the nail on the head.. $10-12/ per hour. That's what the new jobs are paying if you're lucky

Oh, you reminded to dredge up another post :laughing7:

sanddigger, I'm 100% with Keppy on this issue, age doesn't matter for OTR drivers. Especially since most freight is driver, no touch :icon_thumright: The driver that have a problem are all these new drivers with no on the road experience as company's cannot hire them due to outrageous insurance premiums.

Then again looking at your NY location, you may just be right :tongue3: Most company's in out tri-state area are looking for owner operators. You may want to try this website jobsinlogistics.com Good luck.

P.S. Yesterday I saw an add for a Key Account Manager from a company that bought my old firm out nearly 10 years ago. I had to turn over all my accounts to this company before departing as part of our package. Heck, if they call, I might even cut my hair for an interview. Then again, I may not... I know before I left they had offered to lessor paid sale people positions and didn't even approach me. Even though I had a higher price tag, I had the new business to more than cover me, whereas the other reps were mainly babysitters for company/house accounts :laughing7:
