Hello everyone. Let me tell you, choosing a detector has been harder to accomplish than getting my wife in bed. So many conflicting reports.

I'm going to take a risk and go for the excal II, seems like it will work in my target environment which will be dry sand, wet sand, and the woods.

Can anyone help a newbie with advise on must have accessories with this model. Any help much appreciated. Tony

First thing is you need a GOOD wetsand scoop for the beach. I highly recommend you get a steel one, they take abuse of shells and rocks better than aluminum. Don't get one with wire mesh. Those are fine for dry sand, but will fail quickly in wet sand.

Second, get a good straight shaft to replace the "S" shaft that comes stock. Anderson makes very good ones.

Third, get a good book on explaining the Excal. For this, I will recommend you look up Clive James Clynick.

Fourth, if you are hunting the woods, you need a good shovel. Lesche makes great relic shovels that you will never have to worry breaking.

One of Jasons suggestions........

If your new to the excalibur, CJC has a Great new book for first time owners of the excalibur, "The Minelab Excalibur from Beginniner to Advanced" This Book covers every aspect of the excalibur. It also comes with a CD that explains the different settings, and the best setting and how they sound. Shows the audio of different targets and what to listen for on good and bad targets, 30 minutes of great info.....Perfect for the Beginner to Advanced user.

Hey OBN. I'm not trying to pester you but I've been out of detecting for a bit but was wondering if you ever got the encaps made for the excal 2. I've been putting off modding mine with the grip pinpoint. Hope all is well and you are enjoying retirement.

Hey Midas, No problem. As far as I know the machine shop never made them, small jobs get done last, and it's been a year. I do have a friend that is working on casting them, he's telling me in a few months..here is the post

OBN. Ok cool thanks for the heads up. I think I am going to just drill mine and tap it and use a water tight cable connector. I have watched your video but I was wondering where you got the switch for the handle and the water tight cable connector. Thanks again.

2 Things I would recomend are: when you get your long handled scoop get it in stainless steel also try to get one of the square type, rather than the rounded ones (the round ones have a tendacy to roll) also the straight shaft is a must, just make sure you get a knob protector with it. Good luck and happy hunting!.............Scott.
