    TLowery04 - 2013 - Finds Thread - Photo Heavy

Well, the new year is here and it finds me in Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia with a new ETrac to use. I have finally decided to retire the 1989 blue box White Eagle II I "borrowed" from my dad (it was sitting in a closet for years). I have never really found anything that great metal detecting only a few times a year. I've found a few buckles mostly from horse tack, and a hand full of wheat pennies. I've also found more iron scrap, wire, and shell casings than I ever care to keep track of. I'm mostly a dump digger, having most of my finds being on the surface (i know). But should I get the opportunity I will return to some of those places and do them proper.

Anyway, pictures to come, of my first hunt with my ETrac and of the new year. Wish me luck!

I also found a bunch of rusty nails, a few bits of tin, the peice of a rake that the rake head goes in to and affixes to the handle, a folded steel axe head, numerous gum wrappers, bottle caps, and food wrappers. Also one condom wrapper and a broken bottle with a metal lid still affixed. All these things I tossed in the rubbish bin on my way into the hotel.

lol, you noticed i opened it. nothing inside.

I went magnet fishing yesterday, nothing but magnetic rocks, and an old fireplace poker handle. about an hour into it a guy walks up and asks what i lost, I said nothing but I wanted to see what i could find. He replies, well probably not much, there's only been water in this lake for about 17 months. Prior to that it had been dry for about 10 years. Jeez. I never thought about researching when the lake had last been drained.

Came home and magnet dragged accross the lot with all the metal signals, found TONS of square nails, pieces of horseshoes, and probably pounds of metallic flakes and magnetic pebbles.

went out yesterday and had a plan.

First I hit an area where a carnival had left recently, found my first pocket spill, a 1$ coin, two 20 cent pieces and a set of keys, looks like maybe to a cash box or something.
also found another one dollar coin and two 5 cent pieces, one hit by a mower, and a little wrestler guy and a mustache. Oh and a small hand shaped pendant.

Then I went back behind the hotel to the vacant lot.

I used a large rare earth magnet from work to clear areas where I got good targets, if the target was still there, I dug.

ended up finding a bevy of hand made square nails, one worn horse shoe, a brass house key, some tin window trim off a camper, some hardwood scraps that had been buried, a bic lighter, a broken piece of brass and something that given the green rust i believe to be copper instead of brass, or at least probably more closer to red brass than yellow. I'll post those two in the what is it section tomorrow when i get my pictures unloaded.

Still nothing great from this lot, but im getting better targets all the time, and it's really good practice being in the real trashy areas I can learn fast what targets make what sounds.

I went to Warrnambool and fooled around on the beach a bit. there are a lot more tourists there so of course, more coins. Found two 5 cent pieces, One looks like it has been in the sand a very long time. I found my second pocket spill, a 2$ coin and 2x 1$ coins. Also found one deep 20c piece i was certain was the end of a aluminum can.

Stopped off at a little remote beach on the way home to scan the beach entrances and found another dollar coin, my first bullet, a .22, and a lead weight i thought was a musket ball at first. + some random junk

All of these spots also yielded a good selection of aluminum cans, bottle caps, and bent nails.

I've got a 4 day weekend coming up, I'm thinking about either hitting the Melbourne beach and finding a spot to camp, or hitting up an area of port fairy that is now a camper park, but used to be a betting track of some sort into the 40's.

Still hoping to find a piece of Australian silver before i head home at the end of the month, went out and got a pin pointer for the small holes in parks,

    Wish me Luck!

blew the first half of my day looking for a park that didn't exist, went magnet fishing down by the river.

Pulled in lots of metal debris, and bottle caps, and 3-4 fish hooks, plus a handful of misc nails and rusty bolts and a wooden knobbed fishing reel handle. I felt a pile of chain in a few spots, and hit on some big targets that I broke free of.

all in all i found one heavily corroded but still functional set of needle nose pliers, and one stainless bread knife.

I think I need to re-think my magnet, right now i have rope tied around it with zip ties reinforcing the knots and keeping the rope together. I need to find a threaded eye nut loop thing to put on the bolt that goes through my magnet, then I can loctite it and tie my rope to that.

    well, i'm back in melbourne.

I hunted a bit last night, first time at night, found a single 5c coind and 50 or so little tiny bits of aluminum can that rung up anywhere from 12-02 to 9-38 to 12-48. I dug a few 12-02 and one ended up being a dollar coin on edge so I am stuck digging those from now on.

Anyone know what is ALWAYS a 1-30 to 1-38? I hit this target a lot but never could find it.

Also, what do you do on beaches that every single target is over 10 inches on the scale and a mid range?

I've been trying to get the hang of detecting on a beach but as of yet it hasn't been real great. I get targets a lot easier digging wise, but i spend a whole lot of time just practicing my swing.

Pictures when I get back to Port Fairy, Most of my finds today were eyeballed on the surface, not much under the sand in all-metal othere than aluminum cans and bottle caps. There is a carnival in town tonight so i might go there, or to go see hansel and gretal at 11:30. The carnival seems like more of a date night thing; might just get awkward walking around by myself haha. Anyway, laptops dying and i still need directions to the theatre, hh all

Found a handful of Zulu war era folded brass .577 Martini-Henry Rifle casings. Also two regular brass ones. Is it worth going back here? I mostly found these about 8" down. for each one dug, I had to dig almost a pie pan hole, for some reason i cant get the hang of pin pointing with this etrac, i need to go back over the manual.
