There are places like that all throughout that area. It's mind boggling the scale of it really. If you get a chance go on you tube and look for episodes of "Finding the Fallen" Really interesting trench archeology.....

I know I live in Georgia , when they constructed I 75 and I 16 they followed the exact route of SHERMANS march to ATLANTA ( I 75 ) and MARCH to the SEA ( I 16 ) Lord only knows how much civil war sites were destroyed

And the Archies give us MDers a hard time about disturbing historical sites. I can't even count how many times I have done research and found some historical area that looked like promising hunting grounds on an old map just to realize there is now a shoping mall or parking lot over the area. I recently had an idea to research old drive-in theaters in my area. To my suprise there were about six that all closed between 1957 and 1970. After identifying the location of each of these old drive-in's I cross referenced them to new maps and guess what? Not a single one was accessable. Every one was paved over and built on.

What a historically fascinating find. Having walked some of the more well known sites I would say that one would be hard pressed not to make a find under the circumstances described.

I would encourage anyone thinking of digging modern battlefields to seriously rethink their plans. Not only is it disrespectful to the fallen but can be highly hazardous. Vast amounts of ordinance still lays buried throughout most of Western Europe. These sites are best left to the professionals. Saying that, often professional teams will recruit volunteers with dig and preservation experience so one can get involved should it be desirable.

I am fascinated with past wars, i would have given anything to have been a part of that crew unearthing this find.
