Fl. Keys newbee questions...

I usually spend the summers rv-ing in the keys at Bahia Honda (teacher!) with a boat, brownies third lung, fishing equip., etc... The wife and I thought it might be interesting to shift away from coral/fish gazing with the third lung and try some underwater metal detecting - everything I have read to date (actually very little...) seems to indicate that it is illegal to use a metal detector on the reefs. Are metal detectors off limits on the reefs? Is there anywhere down there they can be used? Last but not least...can you rec. an underwater metal detector in the $500 range ( if there is one!)?

Check with your local authorities for the laws. As far as water detectors go the cheapest on the matket is the Tesoro Tiger Shark. They discount to 599.95. Youcan take a look at them here : http://www.tcmetaldetectors.com/tesorotiger.htm

Thanks Tony - sorry if the post sounds a little ignorant, have not done this before and am having a hard time finding a link to the laws related to detecting down in the keys. This site is helping a lot! As for the Tesoro, is it worth the $ or should one spend a few hundred more for a better detector?
