I get them looking like they do when they come out of the ocean around here. I tumble them until they were almost sparkly (is that a word?) before I try to introduce them back into circulation. I guess the coin star machine doesn't care.

Not only that, but we used to paint coins as tokens for our club coin hunts. Some were some painted really wild colors.
I have seen one or two turn up in change even in neighboring states.
