Mining areas?

this might sound strange but I saw a show on tv that showed different locations where there are mines for like opals, aquamarine, and various gemstones that you can go to and pay a fee and keep what you find. I wanted to do something like that with my wife and kids. I live in Connecticut. I will also be visiting Florida right oustide of Jacksonville in March. Are there any of the s e areas around CT or Florida? thanks in advance guys and gals!

Pete: The only CT site I could find was Green's Garnet Farm on Perkins Road in Southbury, CT 06488 (203) 264-3550 (Call in the evening)
say's Dark Red or Purple Garnets. Some are of Gem quality! Open year around. 9 am- 5 pm, Parking Fee: $2 per car, Collecting: Free
Bring standard Mining Tools, Food, & Plenty to Drink!

Florida has no Gem Sites, however there's a few places to find Fossilized Sharks Teeth & Fossils!
