Think that was when there was the craze for hiding a valuable item (seem to remember a golden unicorn as well).
Buy the rather expensive book, follow the clues and it was possible that you might find it.

I bought the Book.
Still have it in near mint condition.

I never really sat down and Tried,
But I do remember there was a Big "Stink" over
weather it was a scam or not. I don't think anyone found it.
and when the Contest was over, the Producer refused to
give out any details on where it was or how to solve the book.
Causing many to cry foul.

In my research I found that someone claimed to have found the site where it was buried in november of 89. but the contest ended in may. I'll get you the link soon
