Me and some friends like to crawl around in larger drains (6ft or so) I was thinkin these drains off shoot to the drainage grates on the side of the road.
Anyone know how often they are cleaned out? I imagine Id only get pullt tabs and liqour bottle tops, but hell who knows?
Not for the faint if heart or those who cant squeeze through little pipes.

I'm going to assume (I know, I know don't assume) that EDDEKALB was saying that that was a bad idea ;D

(You probably wouldn't find much in those drains. If you have any kind of run off or a good rain fall just the force of the water flow would probably push most of what is in those drains out).

Oh and the noxious gases would probably kill you before you knew what happened so I would recommend not going in as well

it depends on where you live, what your looking for & if you
know how to pan for gold.

Have you never watched Gold Fever ?

I would also think Small Gold & Diamond rings
could get washed & Trapped in these places also.

What about in the "Big Easy" ?
those drains must have some Prizes in them.

I don't know if Dekalbs Caution carries any Weight.
Other then CAUTION should be used till you Know.
As far as Gas Pockets Causing anything but an Upset stomach.
I can't say I'v ever heard of Plumbers & such wearing Gas Masks.
But it's not something I'v ever Researched.

if the reward is next to nill if anything
y risk your live :-\
when the guys that do it
get payed good if not great to be crawling in the bowls of a street
a culvert pipe for prospecting SURE good point
i see that ,but man I'm not sure where he lives i obvious envisioned
him drain crawling so to speak
dude that stuff just freaks me out
a knee jerk reaction i will admit
your not a retard
just don't do stupid stuff in them
better yet try caving (spelunking)
most states have caves that you can crawl with a guide
that sounds more rewarding (and safer)
then crawling manmade pipes :-\ for a few pull tabs
dont do that stupid stuff you see on you tube :-\
there are much more rewarding things ;)

I have a cousin that used to work in some of the bigger drains, cleaning, and repairing them. He's never motioned anything about gas, but if it starts to rain very hard you should be getting on out of dodge, he says they fill up pretty quick... There are also traps located in different parts of the drain designed to catch Debris, and they are clean fairly regularly...
Good luck, Be careful, & Happy hunting~

I have read about some guys that regularly find jewelry in those pipes in crevices, or catch basins, or traps, or whatever. It's kind of like a creek with the gold collecting in the likely areas. I don't know how much success you would have, the sewer maintenance guys might already be checking for lost items, just be careful.

Have fun. But you might want to get a Medic-Alert bracelet that says "Plays in Sewers" so they don't waste time trying to diagnose cholera or pneumoconiosis from exposure to and breathing in of sewage and sewer dusts.

Hey, all kidding aside, I know this sounds like a great thing to do and I'm sure you would probably find a lot, but it is very dangerous.....Whether you think I'm an old fuddy duddy trying to ruin your great hunt or not.  I work for a water and sewer district and we also maintain storm drains...and know I'm not just some secretary, I work in new Construction of pipeline.....the gas doesn't just build up in in manholes, and it doesn't matter what size the pipe is, 2" or 10 ft., believe me.  We've had a few deaths of employees for the simple fact that they didn't check the gas levels before entering.  There is a chance of gases in any type of underground structure....sewer or not.  Believe me....you go down in no time at all, won't know what hit you, the gas has no smell at all.  They do however have gas meters you can put in the pipes before entering to measure the amount of gas in the line to make sure it safe before entering.  Please be careful....it's very dangerous and I would hate to see anyone get hurt.   :)  Be safe in your hunting.
