Hi Ken, since sand drains very well it has very little moisture to freeze unless it is near the shoreline. So, the further up the beach you go the softer the sand should be. That's why I can hunt sandy playgound areas in St. Louis in the winter. Keep siftin'! Anteater

Had a thought about lake beaches in winter. Having been raised on a farm by quite a large northern lake each spring when the ice went out it would pile up in hugh sheets far up on the shoreline. Could this possibly scour the sand and coins from the beach and shallow water and deposit them some distance from the summer waterline? Maybe worth a look.

Few weeks ago i went to a local freshwater beach, sand anywhere, was frozen solid, but hey give it a try. The great salt lake wasn't frozen though, :)
