a lot of people will steer you away from ebay, but I have found excellent detectors there cheap. also, try your local craigslist. you can sometimes find decent deals there.

As for which detector... there are already posts regarding which ones to choose... do a quick search and you'll get a lot of good info.

I agree with finding deals online. I got my DFX from a dealer that posted all of his inventory on craigslist because he was getting out of the business and wanted to move the detectors. He was in a small town about 40 miles away from me of about 200-300 people and detector sales were not good in his area. I picked up my Brand New DFX for $550 (1/2 Off Retail) and I also got $200 shopper dollars to use from Whites because it was a brand new detector purchase during the holiday promotion. That deal is what got me back into metal detecting.

So great deals are to be had on the net, but you have to look for them and be a smart shopper.
