Best place to search is where the metal stuff is. ;)

Foundations, places folks dug or dig into their pockets, stone walls, trails, parks, paths, old picnic areas, places the circus set-up on the outskirts of towns, church social yards, places folks draped their coats while engaging in sports, beaches, swimming holes.

Everywhere!

It all depends on what you are looking for. Clad and jewelry, I would head to a ball field or beach/river. Old coins would be found in historic places (parks, homes, gathering spots, ect). Civil war relics......well, I would have to move to another state for that ;D ;D ;D
