Out of curiosity, if something in the US is found that belonged to a famous historical figure such as Abraham Lincoln or George Washington, or from a significant event can the Government confiscate it if deemed a National Treasure? If they can, would you get compensated like over in England?

Hello -donn- & Welcome to TreasureNet :thumbsup:

Unfortunately I can't think of a single treasure that would fit that Criteria :(
there have been stories of Small treasures Being located over the years
like a chest of coins on an Island in the susquehanna river ; Celeron de Bienville's Lead plates; gold bars that supposedly were part of a Treasure.;
chest of Gold Coins buried at a French Fort in N.W. Pa, supposedly dug after a dream,
& Braddock's Payroll Cache (all in PA)
I don't believe there were any That an actual Name of both a Finder
& cacher can be confirmed & put to. with the exception of maybe one of the lead plates :dontknow:

at least non that have been reported that I'm aware of at this time,

& you would need 2 Confirmed to say one was the Greatest

They found disme's the first dime ever. Think it was made in Jeffersons basement and they used a silver cook ware set that Washington owned. That's a pretty big find

IMOP....."Most" treasure legends in the US are just that...."legends." If it sounds to good to be true it likely is and if there's no documentation to support it then it probably never existed in the first place, or it was only a fraction of what it has been built up to be down through the years. Most of it is just wise tales and local lore, Bigfoot dressed in silver and gold.

I think Mel Fisher did OK! Frank

I thought of Mel along with the Pirate Ship off the east coast,
But are they considered "in the in USA? "

I personally* Exclude anything past the Surf Line as In the U.S.

*as I said, my personal opinion

Thank you, everyone, for your responses. I'm aware of Mel Fisher's work and the discovery by an Ohio-based group in the late 1980s of the SS Central America treasure of California Gold Rush coins and ingots recovered from the Atlantic Ocean off the Carolinas. (I was actually involved with that treasure when it first came to market in early 2000 and now and then still do some work involving items from the treasure). However, I'm looking for the greatest discovery of buried rather than sunken treasure that has actually been discovered in the United States. Any suggestions along those lines are welcomed and encouraged. Thank you, all. -donn-
