Started MDing the water/surf in Feb and found my first pocket of coins (w Excaliber 1000). Recovered 197 coins and 3 pieces of (junk) jewelry in a 20 sq yard area over 8 hours. Would like to hear for other water MDers about their experiences with pockets of coins. Heard that you have to recover all the coins before finding the gold down deeper. Plan to return when the weather improves. Is there really gold further down?

Yes sometimes. It's heavier so sinks lower, but if your finding pockets of clad by all means keep looking, there's a good chance gold is there too.
