I have the exact same thing in my basement!! It sounds like anyway. I cannot see inside because it's too dark, and the heat vent is preventing me from opening it more than an inch. I can tell that mine has cinder block walls inside. The floor above it is hollow and i almost took a sledgehammer to the floor earlier today except my husband was due home soon. So I ended up taking off the wall to my bedroom closet(another spot in the house that seemed promising inside) and all I got was a freaky bird skeleton. Hopefully you find something way cooler than that.

Your LATE.... Glad you didn't find something like my cave behind my house! Like most people here... I wouldn't have had time or patience to ASK anyone if I should "go on in". That's a DONE DEAL as soon as I found it. Now gooooooooooooooooooooo.

Root cellar, coal bin, even possibly a "special hole". I knew of a family who had a very old house in northern Mich. that found a secret room in their home, when they started remodeling. After some in-depth investigation, it turned out that the family that built the house had a mentally and physically handicapped kid. they built the room to keep it hidden and safe. I guess the "social norms" of yester-year wasn't what it is today.......

We had a root cellar in our basement when I was a kid.
Hopefully there's some sort of treasure in it, that would be cool!

One other possibility is that it is a room for a well. Many houses were built with access to the well in the basement. My old house had a tiny door that opened to a creepy dirt floor room and the well. We called it the "body room", since it seemed a perfect place for burials.

No way in the world would I have paused for a minute. This would be a "look what I found!" thread, or perhaps a "I've awakened the spirits of the undead who were peacefully residing under my house!" thread.

Make sure you put a treasure chest with monopoly money in it for the next finder!
