I've been detecting for thirty years plus and I'm very happy that my nine year old son has now taken a healthy interest in the hobby. It's been a while since I've purchased a new detector and I really haven't a clue on which ones a 50 pound nine year old could swing with any success. Has anyone out there purchased a metal detector for a child that has worked out well for them? He really has interest and I want to get him one ASAP! He loves coming along and helping me but he would really like to give it a go on his own. Thanks for any help!!

I also think the Compadre, with the simplicity and lightweight is perfect for a small child. A second option for a slightly older child would be the Teknetics Eurotek/Eurotek Pro, but is a little heavier.

Harbor Freight 9 function. Bought 6 of these as Christmas presents for some grandkids. They are finding coins and lotsa junk with them. Under $50. If they learn and enjoy the hobby, they can move up. I don't sell detectors for a living and recommend my own brands.
