The most bizarre incident I've ever had MD'ing....

I'm still so beside myself because of this, I hope I can express it.

So, I live in a set of duplexes built in the 50's to house WWII vets - converted to homes. I'm out on MY property, MD'ing, having a great time, forgetting my troubles when I hear "HEY BUDDY" through my headphones. I ignore him. "HEY YOU" he shouts. I look up thinking it was some pinhead curious as to what I'm finding.

I SWEAR TO GOD THIS STORY IS TRUE. He owns a **** pit bar across the street from my house. He walks over and asks me what I'm doing. I swear to God, my head started spinning around. I say "excuse me?" he asks me if the owner of the place knows I'm there. I tell him, I own the place (it's common property) I tell him, I LIVE HERE. It proceeds to escalate. I ask him what the HELL business is it of his? We exchange words. He flips me off and walks away (as I was digging my 2nd merc).

Mind you, I've lived here 19 years. I see this jock bonehead loadin' up on his liquor almost every day.

A few minutes later, some old broad walks over and asks me the same thing. I'm LIVID at this point. "Why the hell are you doing this to me?" I ask. I'm 50 effing years old for Gods sake. I LIVE HERE. This is MY HOME, understand?

"Do they know you're digging up their yard?" WHO? I ask? Me? "What do you think I'm doing here? - See my little hole? - Who the hell are you?". Tells me she's had the bar there 25 years and is a 'neighborhood watcher'. My heads about to pop off at this point.

The nerve of these 2 is STUNNING. It truly defies all human logic. They have NOTHING to do with the complex I live in. Nothing. Yet they actually feel compelled and justified to walk over and ask me if the person who owns the place (ME) knows I'm digging up their yard. I invited her to please call the police. Can you imagine how city cops would react if they told them there's a guy out here with a metal detector digging up his property?

I've had a few run ins, but NOTHING like this. And I SWEAR every word I'm telling you is the truth.

What is it about this hobby that people find so offensive where somebody without the least bit of authority thinks they can get away with that?

I had no choice but to get angry and give both of them a piece of my mind. This place has bikers ripping out at 2:00, have the police there 2-3 a month and he has the AUDACITY to tell me he's caring about the neighborhood?

They who have no life, and with nothing to do with it ... try to find some purpose.

Go down to Home Depot and rent a mini backhoe and see if you can round up the rest of the losers in town. Then while you have them all in one place nudge them in the hole with the arm of the backhoe ..... Oops!

For all the problems a bar can encounter when ill will is generated in a neighborhood. (the nearest here was shut down recently after being scrutinized enough to rack up too many violations over time) it is counter productive to not be good neighbors. Asking if you had permission seems o.k. if they are truly looking out for neighbors but your having it should have ended with their giving a polite "alright have a good day neighbor" or similar . Congrats on the silvers!

I would have been really pissed also guy.

I live in the woods also and am glad. But even this was NOT enough for me to avoid trouble. My dad and I were cutting trees and burning brush to clear off a lot for my home after I paid cash for my 12.5 acres. A guy pulls up in a Jeep, jumps out and starts YELLING at us. Asks us "What the hell we thought we were doing"? Now this was NOT the way to approach my father or I. It was obvious what we were doing. So I told him we're clearing off a lot for a home. He says "It's not even your property!!!" "And the owner would not want you cutting trees, burning brush and drinking beer up here." I told him I am the owner and for him to F-off. Now I'm real pissed. Then he says "Bulls**t your not the owner". My dad who hadn't said a word yet walked over to the truck and openly strapped on his hostler. The guy yells at us that "We're 2 nuts" and says "I'll be back and don't cut any more trees". He left then went and got the Sheriff's to come out with him. We had 5 more trees laid down and he jumps out and is livid with anger while the 2 officers watched and listened. My dad went back to the truck instantly again. He says "Look their cutting trees, have guns and drinking beer". The older officer says "So". This guy then yells at the Officers that he's buying all this property next week and all the land behind it to the Duck River which is 100's and 100's of acres. I said "I know 12.5 acres your NOT buying and told him to get his ass off it now." He then comes completely unhinged. The officers asked if I owned it and I said yes. End of argument. The guy had to be escorted down off the ridge yelling and screaming. I moved out there to get away from this kind of s**t.

Later I found out he's the owner of an AC company in Knoxville TN. and was going to buy up all the property up for a deer ranch. My 12.5 acres had all the road frontage (7/10 mile) to the property out back. He didn't "think" anybody would buy the weird piece of property before him. It gets worse later.....

You really wanna get them crazed? Ignore them. I had a guy yell and scream at me for 15 min while I totally made believe he wasn't there. Not one word or eye contact made by me. Talk about pissed, oh boy.

Sorry to hear you had a similar run-in with a similar psychotic personality.

I don't think there's a word in the English language strong enough to describe the arrogance and nerve of some people. I just don't understand it. I am, however prepared to call the police on the guy who's hassling me on MY OWN PROPERTY.

These are the types of personalities that become elected officials, cops, etc. and frankly it's terrifying.

I've been taking care of an elderly parent for some time now. I work all the time. I'm under huge amounts of stress. I don't drink. MD'ing is my only source of therapy and I am happy when I'm doing it yet it's something that people find 'offensive' and immediately try to shut down before they even bother to understand what it's all about. It's infuriating. You can walk back over my hunt and not even see one single CLUE that I was there. Do they give a crap? Nope. You're doing something they don't understand (instead of drinking and watching football) so they immediately react negatively.

If I've learned one thing, I've learned this is how people of different communities must feel when they're judged and harassed. I'm thinkin' if I MD'ed in a dress, high heels and makeup I could hit this jackass with a hate crime as he's clearly against transexuals and transvestites. The ACLU would be all over that.... :)

I know what you mean... My story above got a lot worse than I told. My father NEVER said a word to that guy... not one. And this guy tried and tried to provoke. After my dad went to the truck the first time he walked about 10 ft. back my way and just stood there. And when this wanna-be badass took 1 step closer to me my dad just snapped his fingers and shook his head "no". That's when he just went over the top with anger. He was NOT used to being controlled and told what to do. And when he came back with the deputies and picked up where he left off my dad repeated his act again and stood in the exact same spot not saying a word and drinking a cold beer. He just couldn't get over the fact that my dad did this in front of the deputies and they "didn't care". The deputies were cool. One even came back out later after his shift and had a beer with us while we talked about it.

Wow, that's quite the story, and good for you for standing your ground. I'm the first one to admit when I am wrong but in this situation I am 110% in the right.

Again, these are the personality types that pursue positions of authority and power over people. This bone head, flat-top Biff type owns a bar which is the bane of the neighborhood. Has been for years and he has the audacity to approach me an tell me he's concerned about the neighborhood.

As a matter of fact, the actual owner of the home (again, the property is common area and nowhere in the guidelines does it say no metal detecting - even so, why should he care?) moved BECAUSE of this jackwit's bar. There have been dozens of incidents here, ongoing. I would even go as far as saying there's probably drug deals and other illegal activities there, but I certainly can't prove it and it's certainly none of my business unless it affects me and my family directly.

I wish people like him and the others who feel compelled to control other people would get there just deserts.

I have literally prayed that this place gets shut down. They are a nuisance and very, very bad for the neighborhood I live in. Residential with no other bars in the area except this place.

I just laughed at a nut like that...in the forest well in.This idiot claimed he was the legal counsel for the sierra club in town and that I was breaking the law.I actually couldnt stop chuckling at him.I wanted to say something eliquent but just cracked up.My huntin buddy heard the hub bub and shows up looking pretty puzzled. This nut case said he was going to get back up and throw us out of his forest.

We both decided to show up at their meeting on the follown thurs. There he was.Its a small town so I know a handful of folks there and quickly find out he is from the city and moved here in the last month. When invited I told the group about his behaviour while representing them.he isnt even a lawyer,a retired mason.

It was priceless to see the looks this flatlander was getting from the group,I have earned a decent amount of credibility after 35 yrs.here.He didnt respond to me at all...he just got up,grumbled something and left.

funny...I guess he quit the group.
p.s.a decent earthquake just happened..wow...a sign ?

Silver, take a chill pill, you'll give yourself a stroke haha... Seriously, this happened in the UK with a lady breast feeding and someone screamed at her for doing it with the kid under a blanket in a post natal clinic waiting room!! The very next day there were hundreds ( I kid you not, pun intended) of women breast feeding all over the town, really made a point.

Do the same with these morons, invite as many MDers you can and have " findfest" in your yard .........see how they like those coconuts, apples, onions or whatever the saying is. Good for you not loosing it, I'm proud of you ha ha.

That's a great idea about having a "findfest" in your yard. In fact I'll go a step further. Middle of the night go bury a small locked chest or trunk. Then have all the MD'ers over for a real show. Dig the locked chest up and put it in plain view and you all do the happy dance around it.
