sure once they can affix a large coil and detect below the ground. I expect strict laws to be passed regarding these things. Archies are not treasure hunters they are tomb raiders. *w*

Interesting concept. It would be very useful. Wish I had a drone.
I'm sure someone will want to stomp all over us if we start using them to TH, they just can't stand to see someone having fun!

The faa will never approve to let a normal person fly a drone. Amazon is in the process of seeing if the faa will approve their drones...amazon has the NSA and CIA on their side though.

The FAA may outlaw the average person from flying powerful drones high or over certain area's but like jaywalking they have to be caught. If their "unmarked" including fingerprints it will be hard to trace back to a owner for prosecution if one was "captured". I'll just shoot'em down hovering around / over my home. But they would be a useful tool if set up properly for overhead searches.

They would indeed. You would have access to areas you can't get into yourself! A really good TH'ing tool!

As with ALL technology now days it would have a built in ID and probably a chip that allows it to be taken over and controlled by certain Gov agencies if they wanted to.

These better be able to navigate themselves, if you've ever been in traffic around a major city you 'll know why.

Probably not the future of treasure hunting Neo.
As a technique to find ancient structures~ yes. The technique itself is not that new just the use of a drone instead of a regular aircraft. Much cheaper to fly a remote than it is to pay for a pilot and fuel... plus the ability to avoid a lot of aviation and property trespass laws. The Feds are having a hard time with drones and its understandable as there have already been dim whits who are flying them where they should not be. Police are going to have a hard time with them as well because again dim whits are doing things with them they shouldn't.

There was a bloke down in Oz years ago who basically coupled a bunch of metal detectors to remote control cars... not sure if he was ever very successful... however I've never seen anything more creative than that. Imagine the frustration of flying a coil in... finding a target and then trying to recover the target. Unless your flying a backhoe I'd have to rate that a bummer deal. And don't do it in Colorado~ there's people who supposedly have hunting license for drones. Hahh! :)

Only useful idea I've ever had for using a drone is similar to what the tomb raiders are doing~ that's looking for structures that stand out and marking them for investigation. For a prospector it might be an interesting idea as some placers are pretty remote and good aerial footage may be of benefit. Google maps only gets you so close.

Well anything that has a market demand there will be folks who will fill the nitch "down in their barn". And this includes bypassing "built in ID" and any required "chip". It probably wouldn't be hard to take a good "toy" and upgrade it to be one hell of a drone. I'm working on my new Golden horseshoe drone at this time.

You misunderstand the power of the NSA. They have stuff that are light years ahead of what consumer can buy. Have you heard about their black box? They can set up I think 500ft or 5miles I forgot. They set it up and they can monitor everyone's electronics in their radius. As for shooting down a drone well the military drones fly above 10k ft as for the octacopters they fly much much lower. I wouldn't be surprised if the amazon drones feeds were being routed to the NSA. So don't shoot down drones because you will most likely have government agents surround you within that hour of shooting down a drone.

I've read somewhere u can use infrared to see old trails if true it could be useful besides archies using it for there sites.

Ah! Two golden horseshoes with one drone!

I could really use a drone but it would have to be stealth.

Five years ago while detecting a local school this van pulls up and they bring out a remote controlled air plane. After getting it air borne I see one of the people pull out a lap top. Naturally this got my curiosity up so over I went. The guy with the lap top showed me a view of the school from the air that their air plane was sending down to him. They had mounted a small camera on the plane, so I guess you really don't need a drone to check things from the air. With the advancement of technology, it should be even easier now.

You can call them anything you'd like drones, airplanes, helicopters or some hybrid of such... but today "they" carry cheap high tech gear that invades privacy if so desired. I'd love to have one or be a part of some flights but I would NEVER invade somebody's privacy.

As it is now .....
Farmers and real-estate agents are forbidden to use drones to help with their work.

Think about it.

Now I'm NOT challenging your statement at all but this thought comes to mind. What's the difference between a high tech toy helicopter or airplane any one of us can buy and a drone? Some will say (rightfully so) possibly the range or the frequencies they operate on. Or maybe the gear like GPS, cameras, or video capabilities. But how hard would it be for a backroom geek to modify a good toy into whatever a drone is. In other words what's the difference or where does it cross-over into being a "drone"?

Well, I have see a lot working on equipment at gov. locations. The gov. has been using IF and GPR on planes and sats for many years. The La Cross series of sats with GPR has found many tunnels under our southern border. I know planes have scanned areas of the SW. Yep, seen a lot most I can't talk about. Frank...-

You used to work for the gov? I had a family member and he worked for the government. He had to call and check in to the higher ranks. He said if we knew everything that happened in america we would not be able to sleep at night. This was when I was young like 20 years ago and one day he just dissapeared no one ever heard from him. Hmm
