Did you know that Bell invented a metal detecting device to find bullets in the body and used it on James Garfield? Well, he did!

Here is the rest of the story:

Alexander Graham Bell and the Assassination of President James A. Garfield - Yahoo Voices - voices.yahoo.com

Thanx for the link Colonel-Dan. This has been an oft-cited story link. But the usual version is shorter, and merely cuts right to the part about how they failed to account for the metal springs, etc... But in your longer version, it covers the part about the successfull experiments on finding hidden bullets, and even on use in other patients (who were not in the proximety of other metal). That detail in the story shows that the device could find bullets, which are coin-sized. And up to several inches at that! Thus if such a machine had been made to be portable, that would mean that someone could have been coin hunting back in the 1880s :) Perhaps they'd have needed to find soil-types that were non-mineralized though :)
