Again, it also depends on how thorough you intend on being. My detector works best if you go slow and methodical, so it could take me all day to cover a "small lot" by myself, so three might be right to hitting it all in a couple of hours. On the other hand, I would think most homeowners would be more hesitant to turn you right around at the point when "me" or "me and a friend" becomes a small group outing. Definitely don't ask for one person and show up with three.

Bingo.

I'll take one buddy, but as the old saying goes, "Three's a crowd." It's also daunting for the homeowner - especially if they are somewhat wary and uptight - to see three guys swinging away and digging up their property. Just saying it might be better to cast a smaller shadow.
