Well I have a friend who`s girlfriend just came into a old house that is filled with stuff...turns out the old man did some coin collecting back in the day...he has 7 ben franklins!...1961 proofs!...plus indians.....mercs and you name it!..what should he do?....none has been prof graded but I have seen them and they are gorgeous!..thankfully none cleaned and left as is and I warned him not to clean. The old man even had them put in sleeves!...........he knew they would be worth something someday! Thanks for all info!

Go through them one by one handling each coin carefully by its edges. Most of the ones you listed are common, so don't expect much. Get a Redbook and check the values for each one. There is a slim possibility there's a rare one in amongst the common stuff.

They're all worth more than face value, but most aren't worth a whole bunch.

If you do happen to find a rarity, and its in really nice shape, consider submitting it for grading to a reputable grading company like PCGS or ANACS. Go to a coin shop to find out how, and turn down all offers until it comes back with a grade.

Best of luck! :)

1916-d mercury!!!!!!!!!!!!
if it is even in vg8 it is worth 1800.00!!!!!! In very fine20 it jumps to 4500.00
I would send that one and get it graded and slabbed!!!!
As stsated in the previous post handle it by the edges to avoid putting prints on it and do not attempt to clean, wipe or shine it up!!!
Super find!!!

Sorry I haven`t been here to post but I have bad news!. Extremely bad news! I got back in touch with my bubby and asked what else he had found and he told me that a guy came along who offered him $15,000 for the contents of the house and he took it!......He didn`t even contact me to ask abouth the offer! The clock alone is worth that much and possibly alot more! After I got done telling him about what a huge mistake he made he proceeded to tell me about a stamp collection, all kinds of paper coca cola signs, numerous carnival glass and milk glass stuff, even old paintings on the walls that he had no idea they were worth anything! I was sick when he told me all this! Literally! I had to go outside and puke! He and she was so stupid!....all he had to do was call and ask me! Now this other guy has a goldmine in his hands! And all my buddy has is $15,000!.........oops!.....sorry.......the house and land itself has been valued at $92,000!
I did get to see the 1916 D..............it was in a holder and looked fabulous! I am still sick at this guys! Sorry to let you all down...........

jeez the kid was screwed bad---but he took it--all the way I might add!!! sad to say some of those 1961 proof ben's might just have been "proof" errors ($1,250) in the "red" book since it seems dad was a hard core"rare" coin collector type ---look at the "rare" ($1800) red book if in F 12-- 1916 d merc dime--need I say more.---- a "beating" like that hurts to even hear about--Ivan

sorry about the death in your family and their loss also --didn't see it earlier-- but look at it this way well at least they have a home to live in and some cash money to start up / fix it up with---took bad he didn't salt away a few chioce items before dumping off "everything in it" for only $15,000 though.

Wouldn't it be a just reward if the hustler that bought all the stuff he knew was very valuable for pennies on the dollar got the 16-D slabbed and it can back "Cleaned?"

one mans "hustler" is anothers "wise" man ----"I offered YOU took--- your being dumb don't make ME a crook" my grandpa said that often----- he was good at "dealing stuff"---when dealing in "stuff" ask your price ---if you get it be happy ---what it sells for later ain't your biddness---so know your stuff and what you want for it---pay no mind to the "value" of blue book.red book, green book ect. "stuffs" worth what folks will give for it no more,no less.----- lots of folks make a living outta hyping up old worthless junk ---to gullible folks--other folks by knowing a "bargin" when they see one ---something that can be bought and rapidly resold at a good profit. Ivan ---just that I hate to see a horrible case of "didn't have a clue" ---cuz taking a "beating" like that has got to hurt. ouch
