Presidents on Coins: Some Food for Thought.

Looking at our beloved US coins, and the famous figures on them. Washington, Franklin, Lincoln, Kennedy... which contemporary president will achieve the lasting hallmark of having their likeness on a future coin? Reagan? Clinton? Bush? Obama?

I always thought putting a presidents, or any real persons likeness on currency was a bad idea. It seems a bit egotistical no matter how good the intentions. I like the coins that feature Lady Liberty and the eagle much better. It promoted us as a people rather than the accomplishments of a few individuals. That freedom, liberty and democracy is something that we should promote, and that we as a people agree on.

Ben Franklin was not a president. There are quite a few people who were never president on US currency.

Non-Presidents that have appeared on US currency include: Benjamin Franklin (US founding father, $100 bill), Alexander Hamilton (first US Secretary of Treasury, $10 bill), John Marshall (US Supreme Court Chief Justice, 1801-1835), Salmon Chase (US Secretary of Treasury, 1861-1864), Susan B. Anthony (American suffragist), and Sacagawea (Shoshone interpreter for the Lewis and Clark expedition).

I agree I'd much rather see the Liberty likeness and eagles, bison, buildings, etc. than, as my Dad used to say "more fat-head presidents".

I'm with you, I love our early coins with lady liberty, they were works of art, although I also like the buffalo nickle. I remember the first time I saw a Roosevelt dime, I was just a kid, and I hated them, they just didn't look real, and now, they aren't real. I remember that somehow I'd come by the fortune of having a $5 bill, and wanted real money, so Mom took it to the bank and instead of getting 5 silver dollars, she got a roll of dimes, every one of them a new minted Roosevelt, and I cried, they were messing with me, I wanted my real Merc's. Oh well, they got spent anyhow, movies were 12 cents, cokes a nickle as was popcorn, or a bag of peanuts, a pack of gum was a nickle, and a huge wad of bubble gum was a penny, comic books 10 cents. Hershey bars were a nickle, but for a real treat, Mounds and Almond Joy were a dime, and talk about being loaded with coconut -- I was a chubby kid, and that roll of dimes went a looooong way. Indian head penny, or Lincoln penny pretty much samo samo to me, but I hate the state quarters and the Lewis and Clark nickles. I like the V nickle better than the buffalo though. Oh well, we can never go back. If the did go back to lady liberty, it would be on clad ---- BFD.

unfortunately considering today's artists,
I'd hate to see how they would depict liberty for today's coinage.

they would either steal old images, or completely assault my senses of right & wrong

I too dont like seeing Presidents on coinage...They can keep Lincoln on the Penny, since those are worthless anyway. But as Jeff mentioned. I would hate to see how today's artists would depict Lady Liberty.

it would be cool to see them revisit some old designs, like the Mercury Dime (Which should have stayed on coinage) but they had to throw another worthless President on that in 1946.

The U.S. has gone from slavery to an African American President in a mere 150yrs. Like what I say or not, I think it's an incredible humanitarian accomplishment.

Personally I hope to never see any other Presidents show up on our coinage except maybe Reagan. As it is the changing designs on our coinage have always been bothersome to me. I thought the statehood collection was a nice idea but now its just gone out of hand~ I've run into a bunch of vending machines *one at work in particular* that wont take any quarter other than the old eagle. I like the old eagle~ That is strength.
Merc's, Indians and Lady Liberty are heritage and something that's being drummed out of our lives by PC fools and schools. Icon's like Kennedy, Lincoln, Jefferson and a slew of others are next on the chopping block as demonstrated by S.B Anthony and Sacagawea showing up. So some opinion is probably right in that well see garbage Icons of socialism begin showing up before long.
Its the current fade of the last 4 decades to remove history and strength from society. What better place to teach fools about fools than in our currency. My thoughts.

When they had Lady Liberty, or Indians, it was a sign of our Heritage of this great land. And im pretty sure that everyone felt that way at the time...Now its presidents, or others that people are very opinionated on...Like Kennedy, i think that was a bad choice...others disagree...but who would disagree seeing Lady Liberty and the freedom it stood for? NoONE!

Snorting out loud! In actuality I wish there was some other I on besides oresident's faces on coins. The Indian head cent and Lad Kiberty stood for something . Today's presidents? Not so much. I think Eleanor Roosevelt on a coin would be a great tribute to someone who really tried to implement workable programs for those truly in need before the programs got so out of control and greedy.

Too true. Kim Kardashian violating an eagle. Ugh.

In 1920 there was a big controversy over the "Peace" dollar. Liberty as a Flapper! Even worse was the original proposal was the eagle standing on a broken sword. That didn't make the final cut.
