New member here looking for some input. New to detecting and living 30 miles from the Atlantic. What units should I be looking at between $500-$700? Thanks for the help in advance!

You need to be a little more specific. What type hunting are you planning on doing? Beach or land ? And if on land, what type ? Ie.: turf? Sand boxes? hard-core relicky/ruins stuff?

A good all-around start unit (since you say you've never detected before), is a Whites 6000 Di pro. Make sure it's the later incarnation "Di pro" (as opposed to the earlier blue box versions) Those can be had for in your price range. They're easy to use, good on the beach, good on land, versatile, etc....

Thanks for the input. I will probably using it in sand wet and dry and around old abandoned houses.

Good advice from Tom and CK. The Trenton area is very "relicky" and you are close to Emerald Isle, so I agree on a versatile machine.

Yes, Fletch88 is right about the CZ6. That too is an easy to use, deep, and good on the wet salt beach. However, it is a silent search, which some hunters don't like. Also weak on getting falses from deep nails in some soils.

The Sov and Explorer are more advanced machines sound-&-tone wise. So if you're going to go those routes, make sure you have someone to learn from, if possible. Ie.: watch what they're doing, listen to what they're trying to hone in on, listen to what they'd pass, etc...

If no one around to learn those Minelabs from, then good tip to learning those machines faster: Is to notch out all the mid and low conductors the first day out. Go to a spot prolific with easy clad. Spend an afternoon digging only penny/dime and up-signals. The next day, lower your disc. down to accept zinc. The next day, lower it down to accept square tabs. The next day, lower down to round tabs. And so forth till your down to accepting even low-foil. THEN the sounds will make better sense, than if you'd gone out with the full orchestra on day-1, haha

Is that a current model from Whites?

No, that's not a current model. There is a digital one that took its place, the "XL pro". But there are differences between that and its predecessor. Some guys prefer the older style analog, and it's got every ability that anything new has, in that class. It's a fast swing machine. There are slower speed whites, like their 2-filter classics, etc... But those won't go as deep, and won't be good for the wet salt. They are more for iron-riddled ghost-town type hunting.

Where is the best place online to get these detectors? I was looking at the Kellyco site but couldn't find a lot of the models that were suggested here, listed for sale.

Sorry, I was referring to the TV show Diggers and the explosion of ATPro metal detectors out there. It's why I bought one too! Nothing personal or racial intended.
