True, but the tide is turning. Especially in the UK.
Terry Herbert's discovery of his Saxon Hoard a few years ago, seriously opened the eyes of archeologists. Many metal detectorists are now frequently used.
I hope and believe it will happen here in the US as well.

Melissa , on the surface , you may think that any laws against md's are "because of archies". Why ? Because when any of us md'rs objects to a "no md'ing", & say "... but WHY?", the pencil pusher is sure to refer you and I to cultural heritage concerns . So you and I mumble under our breath "durned those archies ". Right ?

But the BIGGER. question is : What put it on that archie's desk , for his princely say -so. (a pressing issue in need of his attention ), to begin with ?

Archeologist's believe nobody should profit from historical artifacts. They may have a point to some degree but then if nobody can profit from anything there is no value on anything other than sentimental value.
