The most surprising item missing in many folks treasure hunting arsenal is a metals test kit.We hear it all the time here,"Im gonna get it tested"
testing is super easy and the kits are affordable,I recommend a complete kit...acids and stone, diamond tester,loupe,scale,files...about $60.00 ish

MUST HAVE.Also I was able to determine two buckles in my collection were sterling as well as some slag from a burned home site(always check the kitchen area)It has paid for itself.

Very true bigfoot1.
I have an RS Mizar (ET-18), Electronic Gold Tester. Works well, but has been tricked by heavy plate.
Last year I bought a scratch stone/acid kit. It's never been tricked, but does leave a very small mark on jewelry.
RS Mizar= $120
Scratch stone/acid kit= $10
Like you say, a loupe is also essential. I got a fairly powerful lighted loupe for $15.
Peace ✌
