It seemed an easy score, a small bank in the middle of nowhere, just a few muddy streets and a scattering of quiet buildings. Each day, at precisely eight o'clock in the morning, a one armed banker emerged from his modest home across the street to open the bank for business. Not once during an entire week of distant surveillance had the bank seen its first customer until nine o'clock. Thirty minutes was more then enough time to slip into the bank, relieve it of its money, and calmly ride away with all the cash. It wasn't likely to be a big score but it was certainly going to be an easy score.

Professionals always take the time to thoroughly case their intended targets. Not once had he stepped foot in town, all of his surveillance having been from a high ridge covered in dense forest. Nobody had been offered hint of his presence and if he did everything right nobody would have a face to attach to the crime. And the town, this town, this little spit in the bottom of the valley, it was so sleepy it was nearly in coma. If he did everything right he would be miles away before they found their bound and gagged banker. As he stepped away from the edge of the ridge to put the eyeglass back into the saddlebag he decided that tomorrow would be the day.

A professional, that's what he was. The difference between a professional and a criminal is a fine line. A criminal gets caught, a professional doesn't. That's it, that's all the difference there is. A professional chooses scores that he knows are safe scores, a criminal selects scores that promise him huge bounties and all the attention that comes with it. Tomorrow afternoon he might have a lone sheriff and a couple of unseasoned recruits trying to pickup on his trail instead of an entire posse. Tomorrow afternoon his pursuers, if any at all, won't even what or who they're looking for. Criminals become criminals because their pursuers know exactly what and who they're looking for. The professional gets away, the criminal doesn't. That's the fine line of separation between the two. One exist, the other doesn’t.

Fifteen bank jobs, that's how many scores he had taken in the last three years, these scores spanning three different territories. He wasn't rich but he was never without means, just enough to provide him with a comfortable existence and a few perks every now and then. “Work quietly, live quietly.” This was the motto of a true professional.

At seven-thirty the next morning he had tied his horse to some trees in back of the bank, at seven-forty-five he was hiding at the side of the bank, just around the comer but out of view. At seven-fifty he pulled the burlap bag over his face. When the banker showed up at eight o'clock sharp to unlock the bank door it was simple matter of slipping up behind him and pressing the barrel of his revolver to the banker's back. “Just remain calm and nobody gets hurt.” And with this the banker continued to unlock the door so his captor could easy him inside.

Once inside the bank it was a simple matter of telling the the banker to open the safe and to place all of the cash into a bank bag. At this request the banker walked over to the safe, dialed in all the right numbers, and then he swung the door open to reveal a completely empty safe. “Sorry,” the banker said, “but this bank ain't got no money to give you.”

“What! But why?”

“Because this town ain't got no money to put into the bank.”

Sensing deception the professional decided to continue his interrogation. “How is it possible that this town hasn't got any money to put into the bank?”

“Because I'm the only person living in this town.”

“Then why on earth would you open a bank every morning?”

“Because every town has to have a bank. I mean, have you ever seen a town without a bank?”

It was quite the maddening situation, an unbelievable scenario, either that or the banker was being very coy and wily. “Why are there no people in this town?”

The banker glanced out the window to the small cemetery down the street and he offered the nod of his head. “Because they're all dead.”

Our professional robber was growing furious, he'd never shot anyone before but the banker was coming dangerously close to being the first person he ever shot. Flustered and frustrated our robber continued to question the banker with raised tone. “Why on earth would you open a bank every morning in a town where there is no people!”

The banker smiled, slowly moved his only hand to part his suit jacket, this revealing a shiny badge on his chest and a sawed off shotgun in his other hand. “Because I'm a professional.”

I'm thinking he was a professional sheriff who had built his own empty town and empty bank just so he could kill crafty bank robbers. :laughing7:

I'm thinking the professional wasn't so professional on his 16th clandestine score and was no longer professional.
Peace ✌
