A little Fat kid jumped on my coil and broke it....well he was a little Big Fat kid with no coordination.

My (almost) tragedy--last summer I was on old farmland looking for the remains of a colonial homesite that;s supposedly in that area, and came upon an area with 4 square holes going to an underground concrete "room"of some kind. I don't know what it was for but almost stepped onto one of the openings. Later that same day, I looked down and saw there was an enormous snake had to be 10 to 12 feet long and 3" in diameter. I don't know what kind of snake it was but it sure got my attention!
I stood quietly and watched it slowly slither along and begin to make its way up the trunk of a very large tree. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an escaped or freed python or boa because I don't think there are any indiginous snakes this big. Gave up on trying to find the homesite.

Was out on a sandbar in about 4ft of water and hit a coin pocket with nearly 200 coins off of Clearwater Beach, Fl. Spent several hrs there in what felt like a few minutes and the tide started to come in. The dip before the sandbar changed from about 5ft to 7ft deep. I was stuck on the sandbar and the tide was coming in. I headed to shore and tried to use my sand scoop and detector to serve as crutches to prop myself up in the deep water of the dip. Waves went over my head and I looked up to see myself about 2 ft under water. I jumped and kicked as well as I could to get a gasp of air as my head dipped above then under the water. With a weight belt (25lbs) and a coin pocket full of coins, I struggled in the dip and considered dropping my weight belt to make it to shore. Just about when I REALLY started to get concerned, I felt sand under my feet and made it to shore. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Know your tide tables and always be aware of the tide when metal detecting in the surf. Metal detecting isn't usually considered an Extreme Sport. However, when you're in the surf battling 3 ft waves, undertow, and rip tides, or when you're metal detecting the beach in 30mph winds or pouring rain or in the early morning hrs when it is dark (when people are off the dry sand), metal detecting can be an extreme sport...at least how I practice the art.

I finally found a great area to metal detect, I did all my research I came there and saw a tragedy... A piece of a broken coil cover, that place must be hunted have completely dry and it was not worth the 20 minute drive I checked anyways and found nothing. I later on found out that every metal detector in my town goes there, there are even videos on Youtube of people detecting there. I looked at metal detecting club meetings, one was there too! Well, I guess it was a bigger tragedy for the person who broke their coil cover, first come first serve, I sorta know how that feels, I lost my battery cover in a farm field once.

I was once on Vacation about a decade ago at Myrtle Beach , there was a older gentleman also detecting and I noticed that he was sweating pretty bad and the temps were cool, well I kept an eye on him and at one point I heard a groan and looked over and he was laying face down in the sand, I rushed over to check on him and rolled him over, the poor guy had a heart attack.

I had been out of Emt school only a month at this time and I began CPR, I kept him alive until Emts arrived and I later found out that he had actually made it, he needed open heart surgery but he recovered well.

About 5 weeks later I received a gift certificate in the mail for dinner for 4 at an upscale restaurant in our area along with cards of gratitude from His Children, Grand Children and his Wife, very touching words with in, I still have those cards and consider them the most valuable treasure I have ever received as a result of metal detecting.

I was metal detecting on a trail that is owned by a horse barn, I decided to try there and got permission to go. All of a sudden a bunch of attack dogs come darting towards me. They were growling barking and snapping at me. If I ever walked off the trail touching their property the dogs would get very fierce and try to attack/bite me. The dogs "escorted" me away from the part of the trail near their owners house to another part with no houses than walked off and watch me from a hill 500 feet away. If I went near their property than they would come down so I stayed where I was and went home. I then told the manager of the barn that there were attack dogs on the trail, she said, "I know, I have seen them sometimes, they belong to my Ex-Girlfriend of this barn's owner"

I had another time where I got permission to metal detect at an old farm field and was detecting there. It is a semi-commercial farm that allows apple picking and such so the way I got permission was calling the number of the place and asking if I could metal detect then go to their local store and ask to speak with the owner about it. She said, "Sure, Until we start farming again in April" I was detecting in one of the many many fields when a pitbull ran out of a random neighboring house. The dog ran at me full speed, barking. I ran the other way. When I got far enough the dog turned around and sit on the grass.

Last one, I was metal detecting in a promising woods. Every thing was going completely great when I stepped on a rotting log with what looked like flies flying all around it. Next thing I know yellow jackets were in my hair on my shirt and legs. One yellow jacket climbed up my pant leg and stung me. I threw my metal detector on the ground and ran as fast as I could. Sadly, I was very dumb when I threw the metal detector down, it landed right on the log with the nest. After five minutes I ran to the log, quickly grabbed my detector and ran back. By some weird miracle I only ended up with a total of one sting, the one on my leg. What completely made up for it later was getting 32 Walking Liberties Halves for face value at a supermarket.
