Well it's not specifically for coins but I bought a Celestron microscope the other day. It has a 3.5" led screen for viewing and has a magnification range from 4-160 times. The lower the better for coins as they're huge objects for a microscope. I thought this would be a great tool for seeing tough dates and easy viewing of die cracks and such. It comes with an sd card and software that gets downloaded into your computer. With said software downloaded it will measure the object in diameters, date stamp it, and allow you to write on the pic and highlight certain areas if you'd like. The camera is so simple as you simply get the object where you like it and push a button. I have not downloaded the software yet but messed with it a bit today. I think I'm really going to love it. The detail is incredible. I can also hook it to my tv for larger viewing and have slideshow options. I took a few pics with the iPad and they suck because I'm taking a pic of another screen and it looks weird. In person it's incredible. When I get the software downloaded I will post a few more. You can adjust the contrast in a couple of different ways which really helps to bring out certain details. A few of these pics are of random coins and a few are of the inside of a thimble that had a makers mark.

That looks like a great tool! I'm using an old microstar IV. Trying to get the lighting just right is a pain, since it really wasn't designed for solid objects and the light source comes from below. The microscope is too powerful for a lot of things. What your using looks perfect for coins!!

Yeah it's really cool especially with the low 4 times magnification. It also has an adjustable led light source from the top. I really like that it has the measuring software as well. In person it is sou h more impressive than the crappy pics I just posted. But at least it gives an idea

Here I thought you'd got sick of winter and moved to the down under of the world.:laughing7:

It's something I've been thinking of putting on the wish list, along with a light booth for photos, and along with....the wish list...so little time.:)

Now your viewing should look pretty good on the new 55" wall mount.

Ah Abe I can hear the GF asking you what' cha watching on the telly, and you replying just an old die crack.

Just was reading up on the site and it says you can get 2 hours of viewing finds out in the field, now that would be a cool feature.

Not me bud lol. I break everything. If I took that out with me it'd be wrecked the first day. I'm pretty hard on the equipment. I had to but this crazy bulletproof military grade iphone case because the Otterboxes and similar ones just can't survive my abuse. This one has held up for months

Spring is coming...
Spend your time in "the books" and maps...
So when it comes... you will be ready...
Prepare your equipment...
So when the time comes ... it will be ready...
Prepare your directions... contacts at destinations...
So when the time comes... your time is spent wisely.

The one I got is made by Lunatik. They have a few different ones. I got the toughest one they make. Can't recall the name as it doesn't say on it

If you like the idea but don't want to spend so much there are usb powered microscopes available a lot cheaper that have adjustable magnifications up to several hundred 'X'.
We used some of the higher end ones extensively in forensic work. Check out Optics Planet or other optical companies under the microscope section. Some are hand held and very portable, just need a notebook computer or any computer with a usb port, and most come with software for capturing photos and have lighting, measurement tools, etc

Just need to keep in mind that for coin size objects the high magnification is little use. If you're using it for coins you really need it to go as low as possible. The reason I bought this one was because it went down to 4x. You will rarely if ever get much above 40x
