Silver bullion??

Any one know whats up with silver platters and such, it seems to me that they should at least sell for bullion prices or so, but you can find em cheap everywhere, is the silver inferior or,not worth smeltering??

Tex. Likely what you see is plated and not worth much as bullion. But if it say Sterling on it, it will be worth bullion and have a good price on it unless the person selling it has no idea of its worth.

Scrap sterling goes for about 80% of spot. So if you take it somewhere to sell it, that is what they get for it. For them to make a profit, they have to give you less so they may only offer you 50% of spot or about $7 per Troy ounce. Figure the weight of a piece times $7 per Troy ounce and that what you could expect on the low end. If you can send it in yourself to the scrap dealer, you can get the 80% -minus your shipping and handling.

Yep, the silver content has to be .925 pure silver to be designated "Sterling". Many, many platters and such were plated and thus not marked. They have no real value as bullion but may have value as antiques, collectibles, etc.
