I recently found a 1832 U.S. Half cent and upon researching it says it worth around $50 in bad shape on up a bit from there. My coin is in decent shape can read everything. My question is for the coin guys and gals why is it not worth much if there were only 55k minted in that year and I found one of them. That seems pretty rare to me. I found a 1828 U.S. Half cent a few months ago and there were like 200k of them minted and it's worth the same as the rare one I found Sunday. I just wanted someone who may know to explain this if possible. Thanks for any input and good luck out there.

I am not a numismatist but I think I can clear it up for you...maybe. When I started collecting coins in the late 70s early 80s morgan dollars where the rage. I have some today that are worth less than what I paid for them but Carson City morgans have gone nuts and I have cleaned up on the few of those that I have. Back in 1980 a nice early bust silver dollar that would run you about 700 bucks might go for 15k today ,my family bought one from a dealer in Dallas in 82 , I just found out the coin has been drilled and filled so it aint worth crappola. It seems to me that the coin market moves from favoritesto new favorites , A super duper Large Cent that you could grab from an auction for 1500 in 1980 might fetch 50k now. I would not sell coin you found, or if you must I will buy it from you. I will just wait until half cents become the new rage, it will sooner or later, they are rare and low mintage, it just seems like a wonderful bubble opportunity just waiting to happen. anyway hope this helps.

Thanks for your input. I don't plan on selling any of my coins I was just trying to figure that out. I've seen where at 1916 merc d dime is worth at least $900 and there were 200k+ made of those but what you are saying makes sense. Thanks for the input.

This site says there were 154,000 minted

PcgsCoinFacts.com : Your Online Reference for U.S. Coins

Then I was also reading they really don't know how many were actually minted so maybe that has a little something to do with the price? I'm with you though, should be higher, especially a non dug copper coin that old.

And the redbook says 600,000 for 1828. 50,000 for 1832 though but it says that it might be inaccurate for coins from 1832-1835

Mine is actually a dug coin. I've found two U.S. Half cents in this field and 3 large cents. The 1834 large and 1832 half cents are in great shape oh and the 1852 bank of upper Canada half cent also. Wow you have some kind soil in that area, I can barely get dates off of wheat pennies from the 40's around here.

Yea been real lucky the soil doesn't hurt the old coppers here. Most Indian heads come out with a nice green patina.
