So I'm confused

So I just tecently started saving my junk metal I find to recycle. Most of it is heavy rusty iron. Just old metal that's been in the ground forever. However s friend of mine said they won't take it if it's not clean metal. Is this true? Am I wasting my time saving it

Rust doesn't matter one bit here. I do the same and my son scraps it.

So far I am saving only, brass, copper, and lead for scrapping. Out at the farm sites I let the farmer scrap the rusty stuff that isn't a relic.
