Also, if you start collecting, begin with a particular variety of coin and build the best set you can before moving on. It's easy to lose focus.

For my collection, I kept anything and everything I didn't already have. Old coins (silver, copper, etc), foreign coins of any variety, and even new coins like the state quarters, presidential dollars, etc.
I didn't need perfect specimens, just anything I didn't have. But, I would trade out worn coins for better looking ones when I had the chance.

Mainly people look for silver, which is 1964 or earlier, and wheat pennies
