Hobby yes. Sport, How. Do you plan on running a metal detection marathon? Or a hole covering contest? But I would guess its perspective. some people run/jog as a hobby.

Agreed. It's a hobby and can be strenuous at times if you're digging in rough terrain, but it's not the same thing. Unless... do you think Garrett is going after those who "compete" in hunts?

It can be considered a sport if your not a lone wolf hunter. Don't you compete against your detecting buddy when you hit a site together?

Can I win the Garrett Cup using my FIsher detector??? hmmmm inquiring minds want to know..

I self identify with metal detecting as being a medical necessity to my sanity and mental health.

Therefore, I consider metal detecting a medication, not a sport.

(caution, this medication is highly addictive)

I say hobby
But would you consider hiking a sport? Maybe...
Rock climbing? Yes. We do both when detecting.
Strenuous games with a single goal in mind, (winning), are sports. If it don't have a ball involved, it ain't a sport was the old adage. No longer, X-Games, poker, billiards, etc are now common "sports".
Metal detecting is a sporby.
Peace ✌

bigfoot1 said, "drink beer ".
Now that's a sport! ;)
Peace ✌
As a disclaimer; I fully recommend and adhere to not operating machinery or driving after even one beer. No joke! Be safe.

With things being so broad, I am adding driving my car as one of my hobbies unless it's actualy a sport.

Metal detecting competition hunts could be considered a sport...

Sport

1.
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
"team sports such as baseball and soccer"

I say hobby. Enjoyable pastime. Sport to me means competition. The only competition I see in detecting would be to get there first... kind of like a sperm. Is that sport? The SPORT of reproduction! Just think! Each and every one of us is the result of a touchdown! Golly, I feel better already.

Depends on how you define "sport". Competition, exertion, stamina, flexibility, strength, mental prowess, being able to focus, are all part of beach water hunting. After 2-3 hours I'm shot! And I'm 38 and in great shape. Open ocean detecting is a sport for sure.

Label it what you wish, it won't affect any one of us. We are obsessed with labeling everything these days. Dymo must be making a killing!

A few times. I stopped going, and I quit the club I was in. People stumbling all over each other in a glorified easter egg hunt isn't my cup of tea. I see no honor or sport in it.

You hunted tiny target areas then...They have competition hunts covering acres.

Ask Ron Lord how he liked his $5,000 grand prize...
