Found this today. At first I thought it was an old copper of some sort. Now I believe it is just a clad quarter that has worn very badly.

This quarter was buried in a very high acidic conditions area, in my opinion. I had a nickel like this that I found where we used to store old car batteries. The nickel looked almost identical to this.

some very early clad quarters (1965) had issues staying put together the front and rear would detach from the copper core of the coin --this issue was fixed with later quarters and it seldom happens now

It was found on a steep slope of an old coal mining trail. Lots of rotting leaves and evergreen needles there.
Thanks Ivan. If it wasn't for the reeding, I still would have thought it was an old copper of some sort or an electrical knockout lol.

Are you sure it's one of our quarters and not a foreign coin of some kind?
Maybe China's finally gotten around to duplicating our coinage! Lol!

1yr old zinc US cents can disintegrate with in months.
Our current coinage sucks!
Oh well, at least future detectorists will be able to find pre-1983 copper cents and silver quarters.
Peace ✌

MBB, I weighed it and a clad quarter. There is 1.4 grams difference ( the coin in question was the lighter of the 2 ).This doesn't prove it IS a quarter, but if it had weighed MORE than a quarter, it would have proved it wasn't.

Looks like it was laying on a paved road and has been run over by cars for quite a while. I have found coins on the sides of roads that looked like that.

Well it's another mystery to add to the detectorist book of mysteries!

At some point in the future they will be able to shine a laser on it and see what it used to look like when it was new.

Some of my zincs are beyond recognition but that's how we know that they're zincs...totally worthless.

Some years ago there was a counterfeiting operation that was popping out quarters up here, went for awhile undetected as "who would of thought a quarter?" Did you test it with a magnet yet? I'm kind liking it as it could be a modern counterfeit and that would be a better find than the clad quarter.
Just a thought maybe it's not even US coinage, and is from another place that had counterfeit coinage produced.
