A few days ago I posted about a rare Freeman Army .44 Revolver. These were only made for one year (1863-64) and in total only 1700-2000 were ever produced. I mounted the cleaned gun on a piece of reclaimed wood that I found near the site where I found the gun. The bullet mold, which is from the same era, was found at a different location last year. I was also able to repurpose some of the hundreds of square nails I've dug over they years to hold the gun and mold in place. I borrowed the round ball from a friend until I dig one of my own.

Here are some pics of the cleanup process:

After a light scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water:

I had never done electrolysis before, so I had to set up the bath from scratch. There was much trial and error, but I finally got it going pretty good.

That is a neat find and then to make it as a wall hanger with all period correct items is just fantastic.

Thank you all for your comments! It was a thrill from the moment it came out of the dirt and through the process of cleaning it.

Simon, no it was unloaded. There were some older casings a lot of old iron out there, but nothing contemporary to the gun that I found.

What makes this find unique is the limited production...

Kinda wonder the number of actual survivors in collections or junk drawers.

Still a unique conversation piece...:occasion14:
