I found and replied to an older post from 2012 that addressed this issue...
It is a peeve of mine over the years...
In my early years I could never figure out why the sens knob numbers on detectors go way higher than could ever be set without probs...
So...
After tearing apart many a coil and fooling around with wirings over the years...
I came to a great realization...

Coil wire is the "enemy" of sensitivity.

Below is a diagram showing IMO typical coil winding "suggestion" for a detector setup...
IMO This is wrong and comes at a sensitivity "cost"...

The picture shows IMO correct and best winding of coil wire...

Hope this helps any and all of you to "crank up the sens" :)

P.S>
I borrowed these from an older thread... Link to the older Tnet thread with user comments will be below the diagram and picture used from thread.

Diagram from manufacturer showing typical incorrect winding...

Picture showing correct way if you want more sens... And sens is goooood stuff :)

Definitely makes sense to keep as much coil wire as you can away from coil. Especially with sens cranked.
Peace ✌

I have seen reference to such before.
The pics help.
My detector is at hand and wound like first pic..
Time for experimentation based on the results of others....:icon_thumright:

Oh quit.
The stuff you find was probably tripped over first.:laughing7:

Heh... I wish my finds were so big I would trip on them...

5 pound 14k necklace... ahhhhhh yesssssss.... tis would be nice.

Can you explain the theory behind this ? (Why having the straight section for a foot or so leading into the coil helps with sens.)

Pretty simple...

Less metal interference from coil wire itself... which is made from and is... metals.

That's interestiing - have you ever seen a Nautilus metal detector?

They have a metal wing nut which attaches the coil bolt to the shaft and I believe they have an aluminum shaft all the way to the coil. In good ground, they're still a very deep seeking machine. When you do the initial adjustments with the machine, I think it cancels any impact of those fixed metal elements.

Why do you think all the hot-shot Minelabs like Etrac and CTX run their wires straight up inside the shaft?? You don't think they did this just to look cool do you?? Coil wires definitely affect the coil's perception, straight is good.

Sure the wires go up the shaft, I really like trying to stuff that coiled up wire through the smaller shaft hole.(sarcasm)
Tying a string around the connector then pulling it through that way works well.
Any other method of trying to get the coiled up wire through the hole one feels like there is an engineer looking down on them grinning their arse off because they have given yet another coil changer the shaft.

I used a zip tie to do much the same thing..I ran the coil wire on my ATP up 12' on the shaft then tied it with zip tie ; then started winding. Dont know it it helped but it seemed right.

Have to say I disagree with it making allot of difference running the coil wire straight for a foot or so. I, DO NOT start coiling my wire right away but, a gentle rise with a bit of a bend for the first 6 inchs or so and then start the coiling. The slight bend is for coil movement. Never had a sensitivity problem over 30+ years of detecting and over 15 detectors.
Not saying the straight run is wrong but, I can't see a difference. Not that they know it all but, never "yet" seen a detector manufacture mention a straight run like mentioned. Anywho ,what ever works.

ps, remember only coil the sure counterclockwise ......:laughing7:

Agreed.
The Deus takes coil winding outta the equation.
The future of metal detecting will surely be wireless.
Hopefully soon, all other manufacturers of metal detectors will produce a wireless machine.
I'd be willing to bet, alot of reverse engineering is present these days. ;)
Peace ✌
