Where to prospect for gold

I'm in North Charleston and would like to go prospecting for gold. Where can I go so that I'm not going to get in trouble trespassing or on someone else's claim? I just want to go for a weekend and see if I can find anything. Iv'e never done it and would like to have some fun. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
