You may have purchased a FAKE. You bought it from a friend. If he didn't purchase it from a reputable shop. May be a fake.

He bought it from kellyco I'm pretty sure it's not a fake, it's the exact same as my other one

My new Garrett carrot does pretty much the same thing. I think it is normal. I may be wrong though. I just got mine a week ago.

Sensitivity along the sides is normal, but should detect deeper at the top. But I would try it in dirt rather than air. I don't trust air tests much.

I have two of them and they both pick up a coin at about 1" to 1 1/2" and a little less along the side
if it chatters - off then on and ground balance Perry

My at does the same thing. I think it's broken. On tiny objects it only responds 2 inches up and not on the tip at all. Very dissapointed not only in garret but myself. I went through 2 of the old propointers and swore I wouldn't buy another but had to try the new one.

I fixed mine. Now that I understand how they are designed they all have the sweet spot on top and the side. Mine was falsing and over reacting due to one of the coil wires having the "red insulation" rubbed off of it and it was essentially grounding out on the circuit board. Because it is a full year out of warranty and I am very impatient, I fixed it myself.

I pain stakingly removed the circuit board from the body, took a small piece of tape and covered up the CB where the wires were touching and it's working perfectly. I think I might fix a small coin onto the body behind the coil to increase the range but that will come later.

If if you decide to do this. watch every YouTube video you can and follow it step by step. You can easily break the "on off" toggle switch or even rip the coil wires off the CB and then you really got a problem.

I bought two of the black ones now, and returned one at the end of a two week hunt to the dealer that was with me. Bought the carrot and haven't had the issues as the black ones did. Best of luck with yours it could be just a piece of dung out of the box like the second one I received.

I have a couple old black ones with a lot of miles on them that are both basically unusable. Will take apart and look for insulation wear. If everything appears fine visually I may fill the void with plastic-dip or hot glue and see what happens... Third one is still going strong but would be nice to have one dependable backup. These past experiences have kept me from ordering a carrot. They should last longer period.

first off not a Crack. That would not effect it that way.
Probes are Plastic.

I never ripped a Garrett apart I only have one.

I have ripped a Sunray Probe apart.

in the tip there was a metal Piece Shaped something like this.

DSCF0010.JPG

Not exactly of course But closest I can find at the Moment to the Shape.

This was the Detector part. (Tiny metal coil) & was in The tip.

I'm wondering if that Metal Slug (Coil)

Slipped Back here

making the side of the probe closer to the coin then the tip.

Though that may be Normal.
