I have always liked jeeps, use to drive one in the Army, but I never owned one. I was reading an article and it mentioned that jeep made a Cherokee that was diesel powered and got over 700 miles per tank. Of course it has a large tank. It also has air suspension that can raise the ride height. Learn something new every day.

Never knew that. I know they had a Grand Cherokee version that goes 0-60 in under 5 seconds. One fast Jeep.

A lot of guys I was in the service with bought Jeeps. Neat vehicles, seems like they had a lot of problems develop earlier in each truck's lifespan than I would prefer, but that could be coincidental. I'm an FJ man myself, always kept a Toyota Landcruiser of some vintage around.

i have a 93 jeep cherokee with 220,000 miles .
i have replaced the radiator and the power stearing pump.
other than that it has been trouble free. it is now my full time mountain and hunting buggy.

I also have a 93 Grand Cherokee, just replaced the altenator and ignition coil, other than that, just normal stuff, brakes tires, etc. I love it 190,000 miles It dos'ent owe me a thing. It is my metal detecting go any where ride!

Cool thread. I just traded in my Challenger SRT for a 2016 Rubicon because the SRT was bottoming out while getting me to some of my sites. At 52 it is about time for me to start acting my age a little bit anyway!

I looked at two diesel cherokees at a used car lot a couple years ago, diesel fuel is more expensive, and a mechanic friend talked me out of it.

I pull a decent sized boat, and was interested in the extra power. My wife is the principal driver. and I figured sooner or later she would put gas in it......

Ended up buying a 2011 trail rated grand, with the air suspension, you can raise it nearly 3 inches for rock crawling. Did some serious 4 wheeling in Colorado shortly after I bought it, and was impressed.

Bought a 2007 Liberty new.

Love it.

It's a gasser, fun to drive and gets the same mpg as our 99 PSD 1T CC LB.
Main reason we went with the Liberty is the front has independent suspension.
Most of our driving is on rocky dirt roads and it does great.

Couple of things about diesel.
Unlike Europe and other countries, we have lower federal regulations on the quality of diesel.
Google it sometime. Cetane Additives Dealerships (purr like a kitten)
Nuther thing is diesel can be hard to find. Not as bad as it was in the 70s.
Off road or out in the boonies...

Young kid kept bringing his 3/4T 4X4 pickup in.
He had put two lifts on the suspension and one lift on the body. This was his forth visit.
As we were standing there wondering how to reach the door handle, he says,
"I keep dragging the bottom when I go offroad. Put another lift on it"
We all looked down and I asked him where it was dragging.

He pointed at the scratches on the bottom of the differentials.
Still had the stock tires and rims.

New set of monster mudders and rims .
Threw in a free step ladder.
True story

Now if someone will invent a "TIRE" I can adjust the diameter on...
Variable differential...
Just sayin.

I have a diesel in my 4 wheel drive motorhome, ( Ram 3500 chassis ). It is the closest thing to no maintenance you can get. The extra mileage makes up for the higher fuel cost. I get 14 MPG in a 12K# capacity vehicle which is always loaded. 305HP

When I joined the Air Force we were called Jeeps. No one knew why new recruits were called Jeeps.

Years later I was told the first Popeye cartoons shown to WW2 solders had Olive Oil with their baby Sweet Pea. Sweet Pea would say Jeep Jeep in the cartoon. So from that newbies were refereed to as Jeeps.
I don't know why the Jeep vehicle got it's name.

Were any of you vets called Jeep or was it just an AF thing?

General Purpose - GP, hence Jeep. Navy recruits were called much worse things than Jeeps.

My first vehicle (in High school) was a 79 Renegade CJ 5 Levi Strauss Edition. Still drive one today. A 16 year old Wrangler. Once you drive one you'll always want one.
