I had a couple of rare earth magnets out of a mainframe computer. I would drag it along the docks at the marina and retrieve tools, anchors, BBQ's, lots of things that neighbours dropped over board, had a great time doing it.

I know of two bicycles in a canal near me that I could see at low tide but not retrieve yet, bicycles ate the heaviest things so far but we got knife blades, big nails and other stuff that makes me never want to swim in a river again :D

When I was younger we used to make up jigs with three or four grapnel hooks on a piece of pipe. Piers and docks were always awesome! Wish we'd had the rare earth magnets back then!!

Indeed, I wish I had known of and owned a magnet when I was still going to school. Imagine leaving school at one o'clock and having the whole day left for magnet fishing :)

That's a wonderful picture! But in my school years, it'd be more like get out of school at one......... Three o'clock the principle would be finding me stuck to the side of his car.:tongue3::laughing7::laughing7:

Ok for parking lots, roofing nails of lawns, but does pick up well for heavier object. Tried to pick up my dropped dockage chain this past summer with mine, didn't work. Went got the rare earth magnet and I could here it hit, no problem bringing up.

II never thought about strapping wheels to a magnet, that's brilliant

One hint if you're using it around black sand. Find or alter a Tupperware container to fit over it! Saves a lot of work getting the black sand off and saving fingers from getting cut by little rust flakes. Just pop it off and watch the magnetite fall off. Even a plastic bag helps! Also, if you make or buy a grapnel hook, tie a second lighter rope off the bottom. If you hangup on a piece of wood or something you can use the second rope to work it free. Lost three or four hooks before I figured this one out.

Good idea, I used to do a second rope on certain type boat anchors.

If you ever see a guy with a surf rod casting a magnet out into the ocean instead of bait, you'll know.....

Those magnets are pretty heavy though, don't break your rod :)
