Here is the correct way to detect: Go up to the house, knock, get permission, systematically clean up all the broken glass and trash the man's two pet sheep or goats or whatever they are's pasture is loaded with. When I stop to chat today, and confirm the property boundaries, ask if the animals go in the front (where the junk is). He says no, but I told him I have been systematically cleaning up all the broken glass and now I'm the hero.

Trespass is for losers. And btw, the busybodyies out there????? It is possible they had permission. Wasn't me.....

Is one of the reasons why a buddy of mine denied me permission to hunt their family farm. Said that thieves dug up enough of his property already

Not a smart thing to do, but the stuff was not lost to anyone, because it will just rot. Was it taken by people who it didn't belong to, sure, but not lost.

This busybody needs to get a life and mind her own business. If they're doing something illegal, call the cops. Of course, these guys may decide to pay her a "visit" for ratting them out publicly. Not too smart, Cathy...

Always amazes me when people post comments like this with their real names. This is why I don't have a Facebook account and fought with YouTube for months about using my real name there. Sorry, but forcing people to use their real names online is a BAD idea.

My wife has been here before, very historical site. Former home of James Madison. These folks are dedicated to preserving this site.

If I had the chance to detect such a historical site, I'd like to think I'd be willing to turn over anything of historical significance to the owners.

...But then, I'm not a detectorist. :-(

Taking the law into your own hands is a good way to end up injured or dead. Call the cops and be done with it. Confronting anyone who may be doing something illegal is never a good idea. Sorry, but this woman stepped over the line and needs to get a grip.

And I'm sorry, but one of the "detectives" is NOT looking into this matter. They have more important things to deal with, like murders, rapes and drug dealers. Again, get a grip lady!

What are they "stealing" anyway? These guys are probably just digging for old coins. Anything else would be pointless to dig for profit. "Yeah, I dug this shoe buckle that belonged to James Madison!" Right! Without the proper documentation, any relic found on that property would be almost worthless.

Built in 1791, this Mansion offers the charm of Southern days gone by. Here you will find the elegant Southern wedding of your dreams or a peaceful retreat for corporate and social gatherings. With historic and local attractions within easy drives and award winning vineyards just around the corner, Belle Grove Plantation makes a great place to come home to after a day of adventure.

Got this quote from their website. Is this a historical site or just a tourist trap? If this place is so precious and historic, why are they renting it out to anyone who wants to throw a bash there?

They made their home into a small business. Happens a lot with old homes/plantations in my area. They have bed and breakfasts, weddings, and other events at them.

"My heart is breaking thinking of all that has been lost"

Sorry, but give me a break. If your heart was interested in what was there you'd have dug it up yourself long ago before you plowed the field and potentially damaged it.

Not defending these guys, they were trespassing, but the drama about lost history is beyond ridiculous.

In my opinion they are just upset that someone was on their property and rightly so...

Sorry, but this place looks like a tourist trap to me. Like all those places that claim "George Washington slept here" or something similar. Don't get on your high horse about your "historic" site if you're prostituting the land out like a common streetwalker..
