While the use of the word "scavenger" appears to be improper, it does appear that metal detectorists do, in fact, scavenge.

v. To search through for salvageable material

To search through what....dirt?!?!? Abandoned home sites?? the sea floor???

Was interesting to learn the difference between the two words - maybe that writer needs to do the same.

I saw a flock of vultures circling nearby today, and upon closer examination with binoculars I could see they all were clutching small metal detectors in their talons.

I hunt coins mostly . I use warm water and dawn dish soap to clean them to get the gunk out of all the crevices.

I have been called a lot of things in my days...

The definition of a scavenger is ...
scavenger
noun
1. a person who collects things discarded by others
2. any animal that feeds on decaying organic matter, esp on refuse
3. a substance added to a chemical reaction or mixture to counteract the effect of impurities
4. a person employed to clean the streets

#1. 1. a person who collects things discarded by other- NOPE I collect what has been LOST not discarded...I AM the person who will ACTUALLY discard what they have "discarded / littered"...
#2. 2. any animal that feeds on decaying organic matter, esp on refuse... I am not an "animal that feeds on the decaying".
#3. 3. a substance added to a chemical reaction or mixture to counteract the effect of impurities --- Ehhh :/
#4. 4. a person employed to clean the streets... I can definitely tell you I am not "employed" / "paid" by anyone or anything to clean others crap.

SO...
NONE of the above "fit" me or any typical Mdr...
I often wonder how trashed out our beaches and parks would be...
had the metal detector never been invented.

That guy can go blow a whale.

The word has negative connotations, but that's what we are.
I've been called worse than that, and the use of the term doesn't really offend me.
It's just a word.

I looked at the vultures and those weren't little detectors, they were small computers and the vultures were selling on the Internet.:laughing7:

Actually I could give two craps what anyone says like this...

Just thought it would make a thread with some interest and cross talk.

Sure beats my other thread idea...
"counting the eggs in the caviar and came up short" :P
