While the use of the word "scavenger" appears to be improper, it does appear that metal detectorists do, in fact, scavenge.

v. To search through for salvageable material

To search through what....dirt?!?!? Abandoned home sites?? the sea floor

Was interesting to learn the difference between the two words - maybe that writer needs to do the same.

I hunt coins mostly . I use warm water and dawn dish soap to clean them to get the gunk out of all the crevices.

#1. 1. a person who collects things discarded by other- NOPE I collect what has been LOST not discarded...I AM the person who will ACTUALLY discard what they have "discarded / littered"...

The word has negative connotations, but that's what we are.
I've been called worse than that, and the use of the term doesn't really offend me.
It's just a word.

I looked at the vultures and those weren't little detectors, they were small computers and the vultures were selling on the Internet.
