Cleaning copper coin?

So I had just found this penny from Great Britain.

The picture shows the coin after being cleaned with soap and water. I've heard you can take a toothpick and get some of that dirt off. Does that work? What are some other methods?

Try soaking it in synthetic motor oil using an old tooth brush to release the dirt,it can take a few days but will mot affect the green patina on the coin
