It's far easier than you might think, the biggest hurdle is getting a good (-) connection on heavy rust.
I just like that dark color vs rust red. And I recommend a nonferrous stainless steel anode. I use stainless steel bolts, they seem to last a long time compared other pieces I've tried.

Rubber does not conduct electricity, so no it won't be effected.

What's bad is I have several more nice pieces like axe heads and such that are just too heavy to get to safely stay on my drywall without special anchors. A couple of times the door got shut too hard and 1 piece would fall and take several more with it.

All you need is a plastic tub, a cheap solid state car battery charger, an anode (sacrificial metal) and roughly 1/3 cup of baking soda mixed into a gallon of water.

It could have been worse, but we'll not go there today.
To most people this stuff is just junk, and in a way it still is (even to me). I just can't bring myself to scrap the old pieces. It may not be fancy war relics but they are just as much a part of our history. Not all treasure is made of precious metals.

Here's an updated view, I did some rearranging and made some better hangers for the heavy stuff.
