Headbang.... Tom of CA please explain. I haven't the energy. Basically no one cares about you OR I doing our little hobby as long as we don't deface, radically disturb, remove public resources or hinder others from enjoying public lands! So the more you want to jump up and down screaming "it's my right" the quicker you will screw it up for the rest of us who in fact want it to remain what it is... Just a hobby that we enjoy.

Damm 49er12, you seriously make me remember my hippy days and the great protests we did. Vietnam, politics, civil rights. Alright. The thing is and it took awhile to realize, none of that means crap. The thing to do is change it from the inside. Become part of that establishment or government and change things. NOW, that's what happened. All us ultra book learned genius LIBERALS became politicians, teachers and college professors. And what happened? The entire country has been run into the ground. With all our influence, we have made politics a mess, destroyed a once more than adequate school system and turned out college grads that are socialists who can't find work, mainly because they have degrees in things that nobody wants or the field doesn't exist anymore. But Skippy(to borrow from our Jeff Gordon), I'm up for a new revolution. You make the signs, I'll carry one. I haven't had a haircut in six months, what's left of it is long and I suppose the Fu Manchu can grow again. But rest assured, we'll screw this one up too. Just saying...

Most metal detecting rights on public land are taken away by town council weasels who will pass an ordinance in a blink of an eye. They make the ordinance vague, so it will encompass metal detecting without actually mentioning that activity.

Here's a typical ordinance that looks good to the general public, but it ends up stepping on our right to metal detect:

"No person shall take, pluck, injure, destroy, cut, mark, or deface any flower, root, plant,
shrub, tree, building, fence, or monument or other property belonging to the town."

The "cut" part is what they'll use if they don't want you to "damage" their precious baseball or soccer field. Totally ridiculous, since most baseball and soccer fields are trashed by the players after using them for a week or two. But it gets them brownie points (and a few votes) by passing it, so that's all that matters to them.

49er12, the last I checked: PA hunters aren't having any problem finding places to hunt. Why do you think you are so restricted there ? Have you bumped into some actual "no detecting" rules ? What kind of "no's" are you referring to ? Hard to comment if you aren't specific.

Be careful with your petitions, calls, gripes, etc... Because if it's an area that's not truly spelled out with a specific "no" (and is silent on the issue, but perhaps it just a griper who thought you were harming earthworms): You might end up with an actual law to "address your pressing issue". What I'm saying is, while you think that griping is the best way to open places up, it often only back-fires into more awareness of "some supposed evil" (cultural heritage, holes/digging, etc...) that perhaps the person on the receiving end of your gripe would never have paid a 2nd notice to. So be careful.

Free-bird Tim: I do not consider such an ordinance to be "stepping on our right to metal detect". If that were true, then ALL public land, at EVERY public park or beach, would be off-limits. Because I gaurantee you, that such boiler plate verbage exists everywhere. Verbage that forbids deface, alter, destroy, etc.....

Why do you think such verbage automatically forbids md'ing ? If you leave no trace of your presence (cover, stomp, and ruffle your spots), then you have not defacED, alterED, or destroyED anything, right ? If someone doesn't agree with those semantics, then pick lower traffic times to avoid running into such kill-joys.

Look fellows let me give a word or two about medal detecting. This doesn't mean a dam thing, I've been detecting on 12 years or so, I belong to the 2nd largest md club in America they say tri-county, cortland, Ohio. Anyway we, they help police in certain needs, return any item found that may have a trace of ownership. So nice group of folks 150 plus strong. We try to do things right, remember history is forever, wither you find, keep, donate. This land should be able to be discovered in the correct manner, u think laws r in stone don't want to put in effort to bring things back. This country has a lot of buried history that should be shared for future generations, understand we are not digging up cemeteries etc. so please don't give in so easy with stupid policy makers that think they are bigger than the ocean, always stay vigilant why r u blind.

I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers moderator, here or there, your and my hobby among other things r targets of elimination or major adjustment and we do nothing about how come. Please keep in mind before u take a stand I'm one of your military volunteers that help keep u safe and able to enjoy such freedoms, I don't judge u and most certainly not a evil person but I do stand for a much larger cause than medal detecting, good day mr moderator.

NO WHINERS! We are Pirates, not whiners! Man up Ohio. Nobody tells me where I can detect or when I can detect. Do you know why?

Because I am a Pirate Metal Detector, not a whiner. :skullflag:

Please post by our rules..

...This land should be able to be discovered in the correct manner, u think laws r in stone don't want to put in effort to bring things back. This country has a lot of buried history that should be shared for future generations, ....

Ah the "devil is in the details". We md'rs agree that the best way to "share with the future generation", is to detect, and display, etc... Afterall, we donate things to museums, right ? Afterall, it's actually the private hobbyists who have done more to find out , research, collect, etc.... right ? Even the archies themselves turn to reference books written by (gasp) private digger/collectors often-time, for resource help in ID'ing and dating items. Right ?

HOWEVER: The archies don't see it the same way you and I do. To them, the "correct manner" is NOT md'ing. Because, afterall, that "rips items out of context". And the more you object, gripe, petition, and call around "for your rights", then the more you're going to simply FURTHER THEIR RESOLVE.

So as much as you want a major spotlight put on us 49er12 (like the NRA lobbying, etc...), that is only going to make it worse for you. You have TONS of places to detect 49er12. PA hunters don't lack for places to hunt. Oh sure, maybe you can't tromp on certain federal historic monuments, but outside of a few rules of thumb, I think you're way-over-thinking this.

All due respect that's your opinion right or wrong, I'm not protesting or wanting the Spotlight. I'm just an America with freedom of speech and harmful to none, and don't take threats from nobody even I have standards that don't differ from you. We r never to think we as individuals r bigger than any other soul. It takes a bigger person to speak up on the correct side of people that either can't and won't, with no harm in mind. Let's not fall for the political correctness sir. In ending don't forget what your fore fathers fought and gave there blood for. This is much bigger than a metal detector forum. I'm not making a fool of anyone. I understand this is a hobby forum, keep in mind everything is related in some form or another unfortunately. Good day sir.

Now come on 49er12
, don't get your feathers in a bunch, we are all just expressing our opinions (just like you), and the RULES of the forum. If you want to discuss politics in ANY fashion or form on Treasurenet, you MUST be a Charter Member. I have gotten my panties in a bunch many times here on the forum when members did not agree completely with what I was typing. It just gets uncomfortable after a while, and the old lady complains about the stains. LOOSEN UP, state your case, and listen to the opinions given. Welcome brother!
