Mine goes like this:

"Did you ever find anything?"
No.
just junk.
nothing great.

"How much one of those things cost?"
about $100(standard rainman answer).
depends on what you get
Thousands, but mine is a cheap one.

"Whats your best find?"
A few quarters.
a gold ring once 20 years ago.
all the good stuff was gone long ago

"Can I try it(kids)?"
No.
No its a very expensive machine.
I have to go.

I am not there to socialize, I am there to detect and I take it very seriously. Can you imagine if someone is walking in the park and you go up to them and ask them all kinds of walking related questions? You would get maced.

Used to love the little kid questions. But I really used to love when a couple of bikini clad beauties would ask: What are you looking for?
I'd say: Miss Right
They'd laugh.
I'd ask: Want to apply for the job?
Usually I'd let them detect awhile and then we'd go have a beer. I sure miss being young...

The only people I enjoy talking to while I dig are people actually interested or who do participate in the hobby. Otherwise they can leave me alone. I swear people on vacation are some of the rudest bunch...they think they own the place and that everything is there for their entertainment. And that they are free to trash the place on their big week. Not all of them but its quite a large %. I see it in the water as a surfer as well but out there we have a pecking order that tourists figure out pretty quickly. I mean I love that people go on vacation and visit but realize that people actually do live here and want to keep the place nice.

too many variables for me.
location, age & Education of those who approach change my answers .
But I always try to be as honest as Possible.

I always brag about my Best finds & where they were found.
some probably write me off as exaggerating & occasionally I have to Write
others off as Full of Crap. But doesn't Matter.
Being open & Honest leads to more respect then not, and occasionally to leads

When dealing with the general public i try to keep it up beat, a little humor helps.

When asked what I'm doing, "metal detecting" or "looking for coins" is my normal responce. If the person is a jerk, i may say;

" collecting parasites"

"Looking for the key my dog ate"

"Cleaning the trash inconsiderate people leave"

"Looking for my mind"
"Hypodermic needles"
"Penny i just dropped".

The list is endless.
I haven't used "i'm with the bomb squad", yet. I just may get a t-shirt stating that.

At the beach the #1 question is; "did you find my lost ring?"

My reply;

"was it from the gumball machine?"

"Nope, still look'n"

"Have you checked lost & found?"

"I dumped all the junk in the trash"

"Take a number"...

Sometimes i will pretend i can't hear them with the headphones on.

If they seem genuinely interested i will talk to them about metal detecting.

I talk to kids if a parent is there. I will pull the headphone jax out so they can hear the beeps, but no one holds the detector but me.

I had one guy asked me questions then snicker at my answers, so i turned and kept on detecting, ignoring him.
I have also had pennies thrown at me, i told that guy not to be such a cheapskate, throw hundred dollar bills!

If asked the price, i tell them I'm not sure the kids got it for me.

Unless the person is truly interested then i will describe detectors, prices, detector dealers, and tell them to check out T Net for more information on the hobby.

So far i haven't encountered any really bad people, but then i try to stay off the radar of the general public by detecting early Sunday mornings. I enjoy my "alone" time with my detector.

eh I hate to say this, but I am quite short when people approach me(unless of course it is said bikini clad beauty). It's my time, and I am busy. I work all week and don't get much time. I understand curiosity, but this is an age of iphones and youtube/wiki.
